Emergency Passports
For the trip back home to Austria, the Embassy can provide one with an emergency passport valid for up to six months. It usually takes at least 24 hours before such a passport will be issued. In addition, it is highly recommended to make a copy of one's passport before leaving Austria and to take this copy with him/her on the trip. If need be, the applicant can show the copy to the staff at the Embassy. Furthermore, the person must present the Embassy with a copy of the police report, and be able to document his/her citizenship and. Please note that the applicant has to present the emergency passport to the Austrian authorities (in Austria or at an embassy or consulate abroad) in order to have them cancel it.
Since March 30, 2009, all new Austrian passports include fingerprints. The fingerprints will be saved on the chip and not displayed in the passport. The Austrian Consulate General cannot accept passport applications by mail. All valid Austrian passports will stay valid until their expiration date and don't need to be exchanged. Austrian passports are valid for ten years and cannot be renewed
IMPORTANT: Postal applications cannot be processed. All applicants including children and infants must be present at the Embassy when applying for new passports.
Austrian citizens living abroad can apply for a new passport or changes to their passport at the Embassy or Consulates General closest to their permanent address. In North America, you may apply at the following Embassies:
- Austrian Embassies in Washington, D.C. and Ottawa, Canada
