The Austrian Embassy can also assist their citizens in various emergencies. However, the Embassy can neither replace nor substitute for the local police, ambulance, medical services, lawyers, banks etc.

Those who want to submit their passport applications at the Austrian Embassy in Pretoria, should note that the Embassy has introduced an online appointment booking service to avoid unnecessary queuing and to provide a fast and more efficient submission. The appointment booking service is compulsory since 1st January   2013.

Please note that all foreign (non-Austrian) public documents (eg. South African birth or marriage certificates) have to be legalised of by means of an Apostille Certificate or a Certificate of Authentication.

Austrian citizens should be registered at the Registry of an Italian municipality. Registration permits the exercise of all the rights and duties of a citizen depending on each individual situation. The Italian citizen is obliged to inform his/her municipality, as well as the Consulate, of all registry data changes such as marital status, citizenship, address, etc.

To enter Austria, South African passport holders need a valid passport and a visa. An application is to be submitted no more than three months ahead of their journey and no later than 15 days prior to departure. Visa applications can be submitted at the Austria Visa Application Centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban. Please be advised, that an additional fee will apply for this service. Furthermore, kindly note that all applications will be processed by the Embassy in Pretoria, which is why applications can only be accepted if submitted at least 15 days before departure.

The consular fee is payable when applying for a visa and will - even if the visa cannot be issued - not be refunded. Only after payment the visa application can be processed.
