4-week CELTA Certificate Course in Wellington:
The CELTA course (The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a practical, hands-on teaching qualification. It is administered by Cambridge University ESOL and provides candidates with a mix of hands-on teaching experience, teaching methodology and practical classroom techniques.
It is an initial teaching qualification, so no previous teaching experience is required to undertake the course. CELTA is also popular with teachers who have some initial experience in NZ or overseas, but lack a formal teaching qualification.
CELTA is a standardised course, which means you can take the course anywhere in the world and be assessed by the same criteria and cover the same syllabus. This is an important safeguard for both you as a candidate and also for employers, as a pass on the CELTA course is recognised throughout the world and continues to stand for quality and innovation in language teaching.
CELTA Course Content:
The CELTA course comprises five main units of learning:- Language analysis and awareness
- Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context
- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Developing teaching skills and professionalism
- Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
There are two components of assessment:
- Teaching Practice: You will teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours.
- Written Assignments - You will complete four written assignments: one on adult learners and learning contexts; one on an aspect of the language system of English; one on an aspect of language skills; and one on classroom teaching and the identification of action points.
To be awarded the Certificate, you must pass both components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'.
CELTA Entry Criteria:
Ideally CELTA applicants should:
- be 18 years or over at the start of the course
- have native speaker competency in English. Have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable them to undertake and follow the course successfully, i.e. native or near native English speaker
- have entry level to tertiary education
