What is Montessori?

Photo of Montessori School in Vancouver, WAContrary to what you may have heard, the Montessori method of teaching isn't affiliated with a particular religious organization. Rather, Montessori is an educational method of teaching children that was developed in the early 20th Century by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy's first female physician and a world-renowned educator. She developed a system of education that is based on a child's natural desire to learn, combined with a basic respect for the individual child. In 1908, Dr. Montessori's dramatic accomplishments with a group of young children in the slums of Rome earned worldwide acclaim and became a landmark in education.

Through her observations, Dr. Montessori found that children between the ages of 0 and 6 years absorbed everything around them like a sponge, learning almost everything without effort. She called this phenomenon The Absorbent Mind. She theorized that children's experiences could be enriched in a classroom where they could handle materials which would demonstrate basic educational information.

Accreditation:
Skinner Elementary Montessori is an approved private school under the auspices of the Washington’s State Board of Education.

Our Approach:
From their earliest days at Skinner Elementary Montessori, our students are exposed to the idea that the talents each of them possess are special and should be nurtured, shared and treated with care. Skinner is committed to touching both the heart and the mind of every student. We teach our students to have respect for all living and non-living things and help them understand that they always have a choice. We show them that each person is solely responsible for his or her actions and the consequences that ensue—whether positive or negative.
