Senior School:

Stover aims to provide a high quality education in accordance with Christian principles, enabling pupils to acquire the qualifications, confidence and skills needed to achieve their aspirations. Our curriculum is diverse and allows for creativity.

English:
The summer examination focuses upon comprehension and creative writing. For some students it may be the first time they have encountered formal exams. Accordingly, our work with all sets this term will be devised to give plenty of opportunity to practise these skills. We will also be "brushing up" on all technical areas covered during the year: spelling, punctuation, grammar and paragraphing. Also, the term is long enough for the students to have some gentle but very useful introduction to GCSE style work:

Mathematics:
This term we will focus on algebra, learning how to remove brackets from an expression and how to factorise. Then we shall use formulae both changing the subject and ordinary substitution. We shall look again at graphs and how they relate to the formula plotted. We hope to have some revision time before the School Examinations. The examinations will be the Key Stage 3 Standard Assessment Tests. The pupils' results will be given as levels.

Biology:
Image of Boarding School in Devon, South West EnglandWe will be studying reproductive processes, both sexual and a-sexual, looking at a range of organisms in the Animal Kingdom, including humans.

Chemistry:
During the summer term the focus will be on experimental investigative skills. Most of the practical work will revolve around factors affecting the rate of chemical processes. The students will learn how to display and analyse data, identify limitations in their results and critically evaluate experimental procedures.

Physics:
This term pupils will focus on the application of forces. This includes the study of pressure and we will be discovering the physics behind flight, and David Beckham's ability to curve his free kicks!

History:
We continue our study of 'Conflict in the Twentieth Century'. We will focus on Britain in World War II and initially consider the evacuation from Dunkirk. Pupils will then look at the Home Front and consider how the Blitz affected people on the Home Front. Pupils will learn about rationing and the management of resources with an emphasis on government propaganda.

Geography:
This term pupils will be concentrating on industry. A brief study of the sectors of industry will be followed by a consideration of industrial location factors. A visit to Heathfield Industrial Estate in May will enable pupils to identify advantages of this location for a variety of factories. Tourism is a growing industry and pupils will look in detail at diving in the Red Sea and safari holidays in Kenya. After the exams we will have a chance to study the United States of America, in particular San Francisco and Yosemite National Park.

Home Economics:
Photos of Stover School, South DevonThis term pupils will be completing their Food Hygiene Certificate by studying the role of an Environmental Health Officer and Legislation in the Food Industry. They will be making a variety of dishes suitable for the Summer Season.

French:
Describing a visit in the past tense, using both perfect and imperfect to describe a party. Using the imperfect tense to describe the differences between life today and a long time ago. Keeping fit and exercise. How often is this done?

German:
Talking about your family, describing a journey, staying with a family, asking for and giving directions and studying an extended text. Grammar includes revision of 'my and your', revision of the past tense, separable verbs, modal verbs, questions, the imperative, 'zu'+ the dative and word order involving time, manner and place.

Spanish:
Students will be covering the following topic areas: describing their daily routine, visiting a Spanish town, talking about their free time and hobbies. Additionally, they will extend their grammatical knowledge to reflexive verbs, present tense of more complex irregular verbs and future immediate.

ICT:
Pupils will be finishing off working through the KS3 ICT study guide and workbook. They will complete the workbook fully and be tested on each section after we have gone over it in class to ensure a thorough understanding.

Art:
In the Summer term pupils look at art from other cultures such as Mayan or African, focusing on masks and facial expression. Students produce a self-portrait observational drawing, and then design their own mask in the style of the culture they are looking at. A ceramic mask will be produced for the final piece. The use of the sketchbook is encouraged both in lessons and at home.
Drama:
An introduction to non-verbal communication skills based on West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet where pupils will develop skills of textual analysis and interpretation, as well as techniques to convey conflict and tension.

PE:
In PE lessons your daughter will be participating in Athletics and Rounders. Your son will be participating in Athletics and Cricket. For Cricket they will need cricket whites and the necessary protective equipment, e.g a box and thigh pad.
