Harrow International School, Bangkok:
Located in Bangkok, southern Thailand, Harrow International School is a privately owned independent school running from early years to Secondary programs. It is based on the British public school system. At HIS we inspire students to develop their talents and reach for excellence in everything they do. This is epitomized by one of its most famous sons, former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. It is this dogged determination that each school seeks to emulate and nurture in it students.
Curriculum based on the British system.
The Early Years Centre:
Welcome to the Early Years section. At Harrow we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support to fulfill their potential. The early years of a child’s education is a unique period of time and their experiences during this crucial stage of development has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in it’s own right, and it provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.
When parents choose an Early Years centre, they want to know that their children will be safe and will thrive. Harrow International School, Early Years Centre provides a safe and secure environment in which very young children can grow and learn. Our staff are responsible for ensuring the development and learning for the children in their care by fostering positive, respectful and supportive relationships with both children and parents. The centre houses a crèche (for babies and toddlers, 0-2.6yrs), the Pre-K year group (children aged 2.6 – 3 years), the K1 year group, (children aged 3-4 years) and the K2 year group (children aged 4-5 years). We follow the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, (the EYFS), which provides guidance on the learning and development for children aged from birth to five years old.
In the Early Years Centre, children’s learning experiences are encouraged and developed across a wide range of provision areas, both indoors and outdoors. In addition to the crèche area and classrooms the centre houses it’s own dining room, sleep room, music room, soft play room, multi-purpose room (for PE, games, assemblies and meetings), a Thai cultural room and large outdoor areas with sandpits, water play areas and a range of adventure playground equipment for each age group. Children’s learning areas are large, well planned and appropriate to the age and needs of the children. Classrooms are set up to encourage young children’s natural play behaviour and allow free access to a wide range of resources. Throughout the week children experience a balance of opportunities to learn, through their own initiated play in the provision areas continuously available to them and through adult lead class or group activities. This balance changes as children mature and move through from crèche to Pre-K and then K1 to K2. Developing learning needs are taken into consideration with regards to environment, resources, challenges set and daily routines.
The Primary School:
Welcome to the Primary School section. As a school we are very proud of the standard of education and the level of care that we provide for our pupils. We take pride in the Harrow name as it epitomises all that is good about British education. Consequently we base our curriculum on the National Curriculum for England and Wales. However, we ensure that our curriculum does reflect the needs, culture and history of our school’s multinational community and, of course, our host country Thailand.
The Primary school caters for children between the ages of 3 to 11 years. It consists of three stages:
* Early Years – Kindergarten 1 and 2
* Key Stage 1– Years I and 2
* Key Stage 2 – Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
Our curriculum is made up of four core subjects, which are:
* English
* Mathematics
* Science
* Information and Communication Technology
The following areas are also taught throughout the school:
* Geography
* History
* Physical Education
* Music
* Personal, Social and Health Education
* Thai Studies
* Design Technology
* Art
The Preparatory School:
This year Harrow International School will introduce a Preparatory School into its current structure. A preparatory school, or prep school in the United Kingdom is an independent school designed to prepare a student for a secondary independent school (public school).Whilst many Prep schools prepare their students for entry to a range of senior schools, some are closely associated with a single school. Harrow UK for instance receives the majority of its students from Prep schools and we have already developed links with some of these schools - such as Northwood Prep and Orley Farm School to name but two.
The Prep school at Harrow International School will cater for students in Year 6 and Year 7.
The school will be housed on the top floor of the current Primary School building and will have a dedicated social/play area for its students. An experienced team of Prep school staff has already been appointed and this team will teach the majority of lessons within the Prep School building. However, some lessons will be taught in other areas of the school. The team above will also teach some additional subjects as well as acting as Class Tutors and having pastoral care responsibility for Prep School classes. Additional specialist teachers will be used in certain areas of the curriculum.
The Secondary School:
The thriving Secondary School sees students in Years 7-13 (ages 11-18) undertake a broad based British curriculum, a vibrant activities programme and many exciting events (such as expeditions, school shows, academic visits, school discos and much more).
We attempt to equip our pupils with the qualifications and life skills to face the challenges of the modern world, to succeed in and contribute to the diverse societies in which they will live and work and to be the next generation of leaders.
As students progress through the Secondary School subject specialism increases. Students are required to develop deeper understanding of subjects taught in the Primary School and will develop a range of new academic and social skills.
Secondary students must become independent learners and are increasingly required to manage their own time with regard to homework and coursework assignments. The experiences that students are exposed to (both academic and co-curricular) require students to develop leadership and team-working skills and to become responsible young adults well prepared for the next phase in their life.
