Seacamp Association, Inc.:
Seacamp Association, located in the Florida Keys, an archipelago of 1700 islands in the southeastern United States, is a unique tropical marine environmental education center offering experiential field based residential and daycamp programs for youth ages 10 to 17 from June to August. It is Seacamp’s mission to educate its staff and participants about the environment and conservation. From offshore to upland environments, programs include instruction on the ecology of coral reefs, seagrasses, sponge flats, mangroves, sandy and rocky shores, and terrestrial communities. Our field programs are conducted on boats utilizing snorkeling and SCUBA diving equipment. Shore trips utilize wading and kayaking.
Seacamp shows the way to the sense of wonder within you that will last a lifetime. Through its marine science program, underwater exploration and study beckon you to a world apart. Blue water and coral canyons teeming with invertebrates, fishes and mammals will enrich your understanding of that larger, watery portion of our planet where not only tomorrow will live ... but you, as well!... Seacamp is minutes from the only living coral reef in all America. This is the only one remaining. And here you can see an almost endless variety of marine life forms as they existed eons ago, before some emerged from the sea to become mammal ... and man.
Seacamp is the result of a cooperative effort of parents, scientists, businessmen, camp leaders and others dedicated to the education of youth in marine science. If you are interested in working with such a group, you are invited to join the Seacamp Association.
Seacamp Facilities:
With its beautiful location at Newfound Harbor on Big Pine Key, Seacamp offers teenage boys and girls an opportunity to explore some of the most exciting waters in the Florida Keys, both in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. They will move among coral reefs, sandy and grassy areas, mud flats and natural tide pools, all of them rich in sea plants and animals basic to the study of marine science. Camp facilities include a dining and recreation hall, science laboratory, deep water harbor, arts and crafts building, infirmary, sailing shelter, teaching shelter, commercial kitchen, business office, staff lounge, and administration offices. Campers and staff are housed in four dormitories, 16 cabins have tiled baths, nine have an adjacent showerhouse. Overall, there is one staff member for every three resident campers. This close relationship makes it possible to encourage individuality and provide for small group instruction.
