Instituto Hemingway:
Located in Bilbao in the Basque Country in Northern Spain, Instituto Hemingway is a Cervantes Institute-accredited Spanish language school providing year-round and summer Spanish language immersion programs for international juniors and high school (secondary school) children ages 13-17.

Instituto Hemingway is accredited by Instituto Cervantes for the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language and forms part of the Network of Associated Centres of Instituto Cervantes.

It means the recognition of a high level of quality of Spanish teaching and resources available to the student at the school. It is also accredited by CSN (The Swedish National Board of Student Aid).

Our school is situated approximately 400 km / 250 miles north of Madrid and 610km / 380 miles north-west of Barcelona.

How it all started:
Instituto Hemingway was founded in Bilbao, Spain in 1986 by bilingual people who had been closely linked to the education sector for a long time. Conscious of the need to offer programs that are thorough and rounded, fun and flexible, we created this new innovative proposal. New ideas were developed for people of all ages that want to learn and live in a new country.

Accommodation in a host family, a student residence or Hostel is avaibale depending on the Spanish Language program you choose for your child.

Living with a Host Family:
For decades, the cross-cultural home stay has been considered the best educational vehicle for the development of real international understanding.

Students accepted into Instituto Hemingway's Spanish for Kids Programs have profound opportunities for cultural immersion by living with a well-screened host family while learning Spanish abroad. Each host family agrees to provide its international "son or daughter" with meals and his or her own bed.

Student Residence:
The student residence is a new building, built in 2004 and is located only 5 minutes from the school, right in the centre of Bilbao. Designed for ultimate independence for older students.

Here your child will have their own room with a study desk and wardrobe and also their own en suite bathroom and kitchenette area with microwave, hob, fridge and sink. The residence has communal areas where they can meet other students from Instituto Hemingway.

Hostels:
We can make reservations in Hostels for different students depending on the category. We recommend that you make the reservation at least 20 days in advance during busy periods. We have special agreements with a selected range of hostels to meet your needs.

Visa and Travel Arrangements:
Upon acceptance to the program, Instituto Hemingway will inform you of what you need to do in order to get a passport and visa for your child.

Along with host family information, Instituto Hemingway will notify you of your childs arrival date, travel dates, and any travel arrangements that need to be made.

All passport, visa and travel arrangements are the responsibility of the participant and need to be made according to Instituto Hemingway's instructions.

Students from the European Union are exempt from any visa requirement when they want to take a program within the EU.
