Department of Modern Languages, College of Marin, North Bay:
The Department of Modern Languages in the College of Marin provides quality language instruction in a range of foreign languages, including French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese among others. Conveniently situated in Kentfield, just 3 miles south-west of San Rafael, we offer French classes for students at elementary, intermediate or advanced level. In addition, students have the opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) in French.
French Language Classes:
- Elementary French I:
A course for beginners that offers study and practice in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing French, along with an exploration of cultural aspects of the French-speaking world.
- Elementary French II:
Further emphasis is placed on verbal communication, the structure of the language, and understanding of French culture.
- Intermediate French IV
An exploration of the use of French and the impact of French culture outside of France. A further study of the French language with a review of the grammar and extensive readings from the literature and press with emphasis on verbal communication.
- Advanced French I:
This course aims to expand your knowledge of the French language and civilization through the study of grammar, literature, and the French press, with particular emphasis on present-day France. Additional emphasis is placed on an advanced level of verbal communication.
- Advanced French II:
This course provides advanced knowledge of French language and civilization through the study of literature, grammar, and the French press, with particular emphasis on present-day France. You will also have advanced-level practice of verbal communication in French.
Associate of Arts Degree in French:
Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should complete the lower division major requirements and general education pattern for the appropriate transfer institution and major.
Requirements:
- Elementary French I – 5 units
- Elementary French II – 5 units
- Intermediate French III – 5 units
You must also complete one course from the following list:
- Conversational French I – 4 units
- Conversational French II – 4 units
- Conversational French III – 4 units
- Intermediate French IV – 4 units
- Advanced French I – 3 units
- Advanced French II – 3 units
- Independent Study – 3 units
Note: Students must complete English 150 to satisfy the Associate degree. Transfer students are advised to complete English 150. All students should consult a counselor.
