Flux Studios, London:
Flux Studios is a new purpose built specialist jewellery studio and workshop, providing courses in jewellery making for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. We are located in Vanguard Court, Camberwell, Southwark, beside Heathrow Airport in South London. The studio offers a comprehensive membership package to graduate/new jewellers wishing to become established. We provide affordable opportunities for graduates, interested adults and the local community to explore and develop jewellery making skills. We are a stepping-stone for students and recent graduates in jewellery to enter the field in a supported environment. The Studio also provides a creative environment to learn how to make jewellery through a range of daytime and evening classes. The provision of continuity of learning and opportunities to progress are integral to the objectives of Flux, as those attending classes become sufficiently competent to become members and thus explore their business potential.
Beginners Course in Jewellery:
A 10 week course suitable for students withwith no previous experience in jewellery-making.
Course details: Through a series of short, fun projects you will learn how to design and make jewellery. Beginning with cuttlefish casting you will explore casting as a method for creating 3D forms in pewter. Subsequent projects include making a ring or bangle using copper or gilding metal (you may also use silver if you wish to purchase precious materials)
Beginners and Intermediate Course in Jewellery:
This 12 week course is suitable for students with basic skills in jewellery-making, as well as for those with no previous experience.
Course details: This term we will begin with cuttlefish casting as a starting point for personal development; using pewter as our initial material for experimentation, students will explore casting as a method for creating 3D forms in metal.
Experienced students may wish to experiment with more complex casting methods, also incorporating other materials (perpex, glass, wood, found materials) in their pewter catsings to add colour/contrast to their designs.
Experiment with DELFT CASTING:
Basic jewellerymaking skills are a requirement for access to this course. This is a three day course. Student numbers are limited to 7 to ensure good access to specialist equipment and tutor support.
Course details: Student will experiment with a variety of approaches to casting using the 'delft' sand method, first finding and then developing suitable forms to create a mold for casting in silver. It is anticipated that students will produce a range of progressive test pieces which could form the basis of a charm necklace or bracelet.
Introduction to Jewellery Making - Design and make a sterling silver ring:
This 1 day intensive course is suitable for complete beginners.
Course details: Student will experiment with a variety of approaches to texturing metal before designing and making their ring in sterling silver.
Techniques include: texturing of metals; ring sizing; piercing and filing metal; silver soldering; polishing.
Intermediate and Advanced Jewellery Course:
This 12 week course is suitable for students with intermediate and advanced jewellery making skills. Students will be challenged to improve existing skills, also developing new skills by exploring new techniques.
Course details: The group focus for this term will be 'Etching'. As well as experimenting with more traditional stop-out techniques we will look at photo-etching as a means of transferring patterns or images onto metal.
Boxes and Lockets with Ray Ashley:
This course requires intermediate skills in jewellerymaking to make best use the techniques involved
Course details: Students will be introduced to a variety of approaches to creating boxes and lockets before designing and making their own personal piece.
Techniques include: box making and how to create hollow forms; hinges and clasp making; making a lid that fits.
Sheet copper and gilding metal will be provided; students wishing to work in precious materials must purchase their own in advance.
