IB schools in Wales, UK: International boarding school in Cardiff area, private secondary school teaching the international baccalaureate diploma program. Boarding sixth form college, residential education for international students.
UWC Atlantic College, Llantwit Major, Wales: The founding college of a global education movement, UWC Atlantic College is an international residential school based in the UK. We are a co-educational, independent sixth form college in the Vale of Glamorgan, a 45 minute drive from Cardiff, Wales. Each year, 350 students aged 16 - 18 from 80 different countries benefit from a world-class International Baccalaureate educational experience. UWC Atlantic College is committed to making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
Day & Boarding Sixth Form Programmes for Students Ages 15-18 All students enrolled at the College are expected to complete the UWC Atlantic College Diploma (AC Diploma). The Diploma has two constituent parts. The UWC Atlantic College Mission Initiative (ACMI) and the International Baccalaureate 16-19 Curriculum (IB). These two components are interlinked and share a common educational heritage in the educational philosophy of Kurt Hahn, the history of the UWC movement and the International Baccalaureate. Atlantic College Mission Initiative: The ACMI represents the mission of the college in action. Students are required to follow a broad and balanced curriculum, described in seven strands, that embodies the College's mission and prepares them for a life of service and leadership.
While students have to participate in all of the seven strands, they are expected to specialise in two. Depending on their interests, students select two strands and are expected to show more depth of engagement, individual initiative and leadership in these areas. They must specialise in at least one strand that relates directly to the College Mission International Baccalaureate Diploma: The International Baccalaureate (IB) provides a challenging, internationally focused, broad and balanced educational experience for students aged 16-19. The significant majority of students at UWC Atlantic College opt for the full IB Diploma. This requires students to study six subjects and complete three core requirements over their two year stay.
The full diploma is a prescriptive structure and students also have the option to pursue individual subject certificates if the full diploma programme does not meet their individual needs. For example a student who is passionate about the arts may opt for two or three group six subjects and this combination is not possible in the full IB Diploma. The College will consider each individual's aspirations and passions in making course selections. All students are required to follow a challenging academic programme and are expected to strive for academic excellence.
The IB mission mirrors that of the College. This is not surprising given the fact that the College was one of the first schools in the world to offer the IB and was involved in the development of the programme.
Atlantic Pre-Diploma (1-year IGCSE Course) This new pre-sixth form course is designed for international students to improve their English for entry to a pre-university course delivered in English. This is a year long course that will enable students to study English intensively at the same time as academic study in up to seven IGCSE subjects and would enable them to begin their two year pre-university course with confidence.
