San Jose State University School of Art and Design, CA, offers some of the nation’s highest quality and yet most affordable and accessible programs in art and design fields. With over 1900 students and nearly one hundred faculty and staff members, the School of Art and Design offers programs at Bachelor & Masters degree levels in fields such as animation/illustration, digital media art, industrial, interior, and graphic design, photography, spatial and pictorial art, as well as art education and art history.
SJSU School of Art and Design offers a diverse range of art and design undergraduate and graduate degree programs. - The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery is the main gallery and presents six exhibits annually of work by professional artists. Each year there are exhibits of contemporary design, history of art, a collaborative exhibition with other art institutions in the Bay Area, and a special exhibition and residency.
- In addition to the Thompson Gallery there are eight small student galleries. Included in this matrix of small galleries is a special installation/performance space and small design gallery. There are additional exhibition spaces in cases throughout the Art Building. In most of the galleries, exhibits of student and class art work change weekly, resulting in over 160 exhibitions annually.
- Jewelry & Small Metals
The School of Art & Design jewelry and small metals facility is located on the second floor of the Art building. This 1500 sq. ft. facility includes a complete vaccum casting and metal fabrication shop, a micro-machine shop, sheet metal shop and welding facilities. This area has a complete fume collection system.
- Central Shop
The School of Art & Design central shop facility is located on the first floor of the Art building. This 4000 sq. ft. facility includes a complete wood and plastic fabrication shop, a machine shop, sheet metal shop, spray booth, welding shop and mat cutting and framing facilities. The Shops have a full service dust collection and air filtration system.
- Foundry
The School of Art & Design metal fabrication and foundry facility is located 1 mile south of the main campus at 1036 South Fifth St. between Martha St. and Keyes. This 6000 sq. ft. indoor facility with an adjacent 12,000 sq. ft. outdoor fabrication yard includes a complete bronze and aluminum casting foundry, metal fabrication shop and welding shops. This facility also includes six graduate studios.
- Glass Making
San Jose State has a well-equipped hot shop with two benches, two clear 150 lb. crucible pots, two glory holes, and two large annealing ovens. The hot shop also has a large pickup oven, garage and pipe warmer. The cold working area includes two silicon carbide grit wheels, one diamond wheel, a belt sander, polishing wheels, tile chop saw, cold glass lathe, and a band saw. We have a glass casting facility that includes a plaster-silica mold room with hoods, wax area, and a flat glass area for preparing fusings and slumpings. Our kiln area includes two fusing and slumping kilns and five casting kilns, varying in size.
