Management, Marketing & Interdisciplinary Business:
The Department of Management, Marketing and Interdisciplinary Business offers a B.S. in Business Administration with specializations in:
* Management
* MarketingMarketing
* Interdisciplinary Business
Management:Management is about working with people for organizational performance. The essence of the management specialization is to understand organizational dynamics and the foundations of decision-making and leadership. The curriculum includes organization-wide topics such as organizational design, entrepreneurship, or corporate social responsibility; policy courses such as Strategic Human Resource Management or Compensation Management; and skill-building courses such as Negotiation, Leadership, Cross-Cultural Management, and Decision-Making.
Marketing:
Marketing is both an orientation that organizations may adopt with respect to how they conduct business and a functional area. As an orientation, being marketing focused means that an organization recognizes it must consider the wants and needs of its customers to be successful. As a functional area, marketing is responsible for generating the revenue that sustains the operation of the organization.
Marketing includes numerous activities aimed at creating satisfying exchange relationships between the organization and its customers. These activities include the selection of appropriate customers, developing the product to satisfy customer needs, setting a price that will make the exchange profitable, developing ways of communicating with customers, and managing supply and distribution relationships. Marketing professionals need to possess analytical skills and be creative thinkers.
Interdisciplinary Business:
The Interdisciplinary Business (IDB) specialization is designed for students seeking broad-based skills to succeed in the fast-changing world of business. This specialization allows students to take advanced courses in a variety of business disciplines, rather than concentrate in one particular area of business.
It permits flexibility in the business curriculum while presenting a strong foundation in the functional areas of business. All students specializing in Interdisciplinary Business work with advisors to develop a program of study that fits their specific academic and career interests.
Finance & International Business:
The Department of Finance and International Business offers a B.S. in Business Administration with specializations in:
- Finance
- International Business
Finance:
The study of finance provides the student with the ability to analyze the allocation of financial resources within a corporation, individual, or governmental setting; to analyze sources of funding and the ramifications of financial decisions; and to allocate these sources of funds. Students who complete the finance program are employed by banks, financial institutions, brokerage houses, major corporations, and the government. Students are also prepared to continue their education in graduate school and through professional certification.
International Business:
The international business specialization is an interdisciplinary program in which the various business disciplines that relate to international trade and investment are integrated with selected courses offered outside the School of Business. It is designed to provide students with a strong background in international business and an appreciation for diversity of cultures and business environments. In addition to the required three course credits of a foreign language.
* All International Business majors are required to study abroad for one semester. In exceptional cases, students may propose an equivalent experience, subject to the approval of the International Business Program. A maximum of three international business courses taken abroad can be transferred to TCNJ as a substitute for their equivalents in the International Business concentration. Of those, a maximum of two courses can be transferred as International Economics, International Marketing, International Management, or International Finance. Advisor's approval is required for the complete selection all courses to be studied abroad.
Accounting & Information Systems:
While most of our accounting graduates join public accounting firms upon graduation, they are also prepared for a variety of careers in accounting including Internal Auditing, Corporate Accounting, Governmental and Non-For-Profit Accounting, and Forensic Accounting. To achieve their career goals, accounting majors learn how to think critically and how to be effective in oral and written presentations. There are student chapters of the Institute of Management Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants that sponsor career-planning and other co-curricular activities, and a chapter of Beta Alpha Psi.
The Accounting Program at The College of New Jersey is organized on the premise of preparing the best accounting undergraduates in the nation. This is evidenced by:
* 50-75% of our students are recruited by public accounting firms.
* 90-95% of accounting interns receive job offers from their employers.
* Our graduates have consistently achieved high passing rates the first time they take the CPA exam. For example, in 2003, our students ranked number four in the nation (competing against students from hundreds of business schools) in passing all parts taken for the first time. In 2006, our students ranked number three and seven in the nation, respectively, on the auditing and regulation parts of the exam. In New Jersey, TCNJ graduates ranked number one in 2006 and 2007 (out of 23 colleges and universities) in the percentage of students passing all parts of the exam.
* Our graduates have been accepted to top national graduate schools such as Harvard Law School, and several have entered doctoral programs in accounting at schools such as Rutgers and Temple.
Economics:
The Department of Economics contains the following degree programs:
- B.S. in Economics
- B.A. in Economics
:
Economics is the study of the ways society chooses to use its scarce resources to attain alternative and often conflicting goals. As a social science, economics is concerned with the major issues of today.There are two undergraduate programs in economics: a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science. The programs prepare students for careers in business and government, and for graduate study in economics, law, business, and public policy or administration.
The Economics Bachelor of Science program provides extensive instruction in other business disciplines (e.g., finance, management) and offers excellent preparation for the MBA degree. The Economics Bachelor of Arts program offers additional flexibility to enroll in courses outside of the business school (e.g., history, political science) and is especially recommended for graduate study in economics, law, and public administration.
