I started learning Chinese with Frontiers because I was looking for class lessons I could join immediately. They start Chinese classes for beginners every month which makes it easy to start at nearly any time. Also, if you are away for holidays for a couple of weeks you will easily find a class at your level again.

Since I felt that I needed to exercise and especially speak Chinese more intensively myself, I changed to private lessons now. The management of Frontiers is very helpful if you want to change e.g. your schedule or if you want to be taught something nobody asked for so far. When I asked for Geography lessons / more in-depth information on Chinese culture, I got customized classes within ten days or so.

You almost always deal with young teachers in their mid 20s who are still very enthusiastic to explain their language, their culture and their country to you. As a foreigner in a new culture I find it very helpful that they are willing to answer every question I have either on Chinese, China or on Chinese culture. It also helped me a lot to find my way in Beijing and China.

Each month there is an activity that involves sightseeing and practical exercises. These are mainly for students to practice their Chinese and understand the way local people live.

For example:
Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Beijing Hutong, Beidaihe (a seaside city, 2.5 hours by train from Beijing), Tianjin city, etc.

As the capital of China, Beijing is one of the world's truly imposing cities, with a 3,000-year history and 15.3 million people (2005). Covering 16,808 square kilometers in area, it is the political, cultural and economic center of the People’s Republic.

Situated in northeast China, Beijing adjoins the Inner Mongolian Highland to the northwest and the Great Northern Plain to the south. Five rivers run through the city, connecting it to the eastern Bohai Sea. Administratively, the Beijing municipality equals the status of a province, reporting directly to the central government.

Rich in history, Beijing has been China’s primary capital for more than seven centuries. China’s imperial past and political present meet at Tiananmen square, where the Forbidden City palace of the emperors gives way to the Great Hall of the People congress building and the mausoleum of Chairman Mao Zedong. The old city walls have been replaced by ring roads, and many of the old residential districts of alleys and courtyard houses have been turned into high-rise hotels, office buildings, and department stores. Beijing, a dynamic city where the old and new intermingle, remains a magnet for visitors from inside and outside China.
