Charterhouse School, Johannesburg:
Located in Honeydew, Roodepoort, near Johannesburg, Charterhouse is an exclusive coeducational independent school in the finest tradition of private education. At Charterhouse, a structured approach to learning is maintained. The British Syllabus forms the foundation for all syllabus and curriculum development for the school. Specific content is adapted where necessary to ensure that the curriculum is relevant to the South African situation. The curriculum is in line with the Core Curriculum as set out by the Gauteng Department for Education. Charterhouse School is a registered member of the Cambridge International Primary Programme.
Charterhouse has a proud tradition that began with the founding of the pre-primary school in 1976.
Charterhouse children begin their school life in Grade 000 (3 years turning 4), where they will develop a broad spectrum of social, academic and physical skills needed to graduate into the formal learning environment at Charterhouse Preparatory. The focus during these early years is towards fine and gross motor skills, auditory, phonics and a grasp of basic numeracy in both concrete experience and perceptual awareness.
The progression into the primary school offers children a coordinated, integrated education from the age of three years to the conclusion of their Grade 7 year.
Charterhouse Preparatory School caters for parents who desire a closer teacher-pupil relationship for their child, and an atmosphere where each individual pupil can be recognized and developed to their full potential. The curriculum uses elements of both the South African and British education syllabus, combining the best of both in such a way that it brings out the greatest qualities in our pupils. This is reinforced through our accreditation with the Cambridge International Primary Program.
Charterhouse is dedicated to the view that children need to cultivate their individuality by exploring a patchwork of different interests. Consequently, a broad, inclusive curriculum and small, intimate classes create the ideal environment for enhancing self-expression. Combinations of traditional and innovative study techniques are entrenched. This approach is founded on the belief that education is an active process, rather than just an exercise of absorption. Manners, respect and a positive self-esteem are regarded as fundamental aspects of a pupil’s development. Such timeless values inculcate a sense of pride and a strength of purpose in each and every pupil.
The curriculum sets out the most important knowledge and skills that every child has the right to learn. It is the framework given to all Charterhouse teachers, so that each pupil is taught in a way that is balanced and managed, yet hard enough to challenge them. It sets standards that measure how well pupils are doing in each subject, so that teachers can plan to help them do even better.
Our facilities are world class and the equipment of a high standard as evidenced by our science lab, computer facilities and music room.
Charterhouse has a fine tradition of participation, sportsmanship and fair play on and off the sports field. We provide physical education classes, skills coaching and team building in many sports. The sports offered include athletics, chess, cricket, cross-country, hockey, netball, soccer, softball, swimming and tennis. We also provide private extra-murals such as ballet, tap and rhythm, martial arts and golf. On any day, the playing fields are abuzz with children eagerly involved in inter-school or inter-house activities.
Children who specialise in sport or activities outside of those catered for by Charterhouse are encouraged to do so and are given full recognition for any achievements.
Our aim is to encourage participation in at least one sport by all children. It is our belief that involvement outside the classroom is very important in the overall development of individuals and facilitates the growth of an improved sense of self in each participant.
