From our first contact with the Società Dante Alighieri school we have been impressed with the kindness and efficiency of everyone working with the school. The staff at the school has never hesitated to help us with our myriad needs, from finding comfortable lodgings for us and our two daughters to registering our children in the local elementary school. We truly would not have been able to work our way through the maze of paperwork needed to settle ourselves in Siena for seven months without the efforts of the Dante Alighieri staff. In addition, we have enjoyed the talented and knowledgeable teachers, who have provided innumerable opportunities for us to learn about Italy. The teachers have shared a very personal side of Italy, not only through classroom discussions, but also by guiding historical tours of Siena and including us in local festivals and sporting events. We are looking forward to upcoming courses in Italian culture, cooking and film. The Maremma is an area in Italy, consisting of part of southern Tuscany (partly coincident with the province of Grosseto) and part of northern Lazio (in the province of Viterbo on the border of the region).

The poet Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia places the Maremma between Cecina and Corneto, the former name of Tarquinia.

Non han sì aspri sterpi nè sì folti
quelle fiere selvagge che 'n odio hanno

It was traditionally populated by the Butteri, cattle-breeders who until recently used horses with a distinctive style of saddle. Once unhealthy because of its many marshes, the Maremma was drained during the fascist regime and re-populated with people coming from other Italian regions, notably from Veneto.
