Located just south of Dublin city centre close to the Grand Canal, Rathmines contains an eclectic mix of the old and the new.

With a long history stretching back to the 14th century, it has more recently proved attractive to some of Ireland’s new immigrant communities, and with its diverse international population, it has a has a somewhat cosmopolitan air.

Going beyond its merely physical attributes – such as the old town hall (with its clock tower), the library building, or the enormous copper dome on the Church of Mary Immaculate – Rathmines is notable for the vibrant nature of its commercial and social life.

More practically speaking, that means we have a reasonably good choice of restaurants when it comes to having lunch!

It also means that there are some interesting pubs to visit during evening hours – such as Slattery’s and Grace’s, where there is an excellent music Irish music ‘session’ each Friday night.

Of course, being just ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the city centre, you will find that you have no shortage of opportunities to practice your English in a social context.

Finally, a tramline, and an abundance of buses and reasonably-priced taxis provide viable alternatives on those occasions when you may not wish to walk.
