Watercolour
The Julian Ashton Art School offers both beginner & advanced tuition suitable for any aspiring art student who wants to learn the fundementals or advanced techniques of handling watercolour. Our watercolour classes allow the art student to explore this painting medium by studying from still life, flowers, the model and landscape.

Oil Painting
Oil painting is very much a traditional; however ever so versatile painting medium, painting in oils is often the preferred painting medium for portraiture painting as well as landscape paintings, it allows the artist to work and re-work; continuously blending the oil colours to the desired effect as Oil Paints have a longer curing period than Acrylic Paints & mediums.

The Julian Ashton Art School teaches oil painting classes for portraiture; painting directly from life, as well as oil painting classes for landscape & seascape. Our teachers also enjoy teaching each student the fundamental techniques of oil painting to ensure the student can apply this universal painting medium to any choice of artistic endeavor.

Life Drawing
The fine art practice of figurative drawing is as old as art itself. Learning to draw the human figure is considered a fundamental art practice by almost all art schools & colleges worldwide; many fine artists also consider life drawing from the nude model to be serving ones artistic apprenticeship and that it's a must do for any aspiring art student.

The Julian Ashton teaches structured life drawing classes where students are tutored in understanding the human form, learning straight from the nude model and drawing or painting in any media. Additionally students may practice from the life model without tuition by attending our regular sketchclubs which need no class booking to attend. The school also has a large number of plaster casts & artists skeletons perfect for use when initially learning the finer points of the human anatomy including bone structure, muscle structure and light.

Printmaking
The fine art of printmaking can be practiced in many different ways including: Lithographs, Dry-point Etchings, Acid Etchings, Linocuts, Woodblock Prints, Mezzotint, Aquatint, Gliche Digital Printing and Solar Plate Etching etc... each form of printmaking has its own unique characteristics and techniques to master and with each individual reproduction of the art print if so desired further steps may be made to further individualise.

The Julian Ashton Art School teaches a comprehensive printmaking course. Our teachers give each student a good understanding of all popular forms of printmaking, to then allow the student to explore their printmaking potential in whichever form they choose.

Sculpture/Modelling
The Julian Ashton Art School teaches figurative sculpting techniques as well as how to sculpt portraits or 'busts'. You learn as you sculpt from life in either plasticine, clay or other suitable modeling mediums. The sculpture & modeling techniques you'll learn can one day form part of your artistic process if you're aiming to create cast bronze artworks or other forms of sculpture.

We also offer Acrylic Painting and Landscape Painting Classes.
