Pomona College:
Pomona College, located in Claremont (35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles), California, is a private residential liberal arts college offering a choice of 45 bachelor degree programs, including all of the traditional disciplines of the humanities, fine arts, social sciences and natural sciences, as well as a variety of interdisciplinary fields. Majors at Pomona are not designed primarily to prepare students for specific careers, but rather to sharpen their ability to think critically and in depth using the analytical methods of the discipline. As part of the overall Pomona education, however, all majors have been shown to provide an outstanding foundation for success in whatever follows graduation—whether it be further study or the immediate start of a career.
Pomona College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC is an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.
Academic Excellence at Pomona:
Among the most important relationships you’ll make at Pomona are the ones you’ll form with your professors. These extraordinary teachers and scholars have chosen Pomona—and Pomona has chosen them—because they have a talent and a passion for teaching bright undergraduate students, combined with a sophisticated command of their disciplines. Their involvement in research, writing and creative expression translates into fresh, lively instruction in the classroom and laboratory.
The Claremont Colleges:
The Claremont Colleges is a consortium of five undergraduate and two graduate institutions, each autonomous and all but one located on adjacent campuses, with a combined enrollment of about 7,000 students. In addition to Pomona College, the cluster includes Claremont Graduate University (established 1925), Scripps College (1926), Claremont McKenna College (1946), Harvey Mudd College (1955) and Pitzer College (1963). The seventh member of the consortium, the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (1997), is located nearby. The seven institutions jointly support central facilities, including libraries; share a common academic calendar; open their courses to one another’s students; and cooperate in sponsoring special programs. This allows students to enjoy the intimate atmosphere of a small, residential college while still having access to the resources of a larger university.
