Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is an undergraduate program of study that prepares individuals to assume entry-level professional nursing roles in a variety of acute care and community based settings. There are opportunities to work with different age groups in a variety of arenas from hospital-based acute care settings such as intensive care units and operating rooms to health departments, home health and hospice programs and schools.

Master of Science in Nursing - Clinical Nurse Leader
The Master of Science in Nursing CNL program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center prepares students for initial licensure as registered nurses and certification as a CNL. As the first professional degree in nursing, it also provides the foundation for preparation at the doctoral level for advanced practice nursing.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at the UT Health Science Center College of Nursing was established in 1972 in response to a study requested by the Tennessee State Legislature on "The Need, Supply, and Education of Professional Nurses." The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program was part of that early effort and was one of the first graduate programs in the US to prepare nurse practitioners. The College of Nursing continues to lead nurse practitioner education nationally and internationally by offering one of the few programs in the US preparing Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. Our Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program is highly sought.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a program of fulltime doctoral study for the nurse seeking specialty preparation in advanced levels of nursing practice. The DNP Program educates clinicians for leadership roles in a specialized area of advanced practice with an emphasis on:
1.Philosophical, ethical, and scientific principles that provide the foundation for leadership in professional nursing care;
2.Continued acquisition of knowledge and clinical skills in an area of advanced practice specialization;
3.Analysis and examination of practice including completion of the Residency Project during the clinical residency year.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. program was designed as a collaborative program with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville to educate nurse scientists who will use research-based knowledge theories, and interventions in their roles as researchers, educators, and administrators. While students can take their courses on either campus, the dissertation must be completed in its entirety with a faculty member in Memphis or Knoxville. Applicants admitted to the Ph.D. program in Memphis are admitted to the College of Graduate Health Sciences (CGHS), as are all students admitted to Ph.D. programs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Although nursing faculty teach most courses included within the program schema, students have the opportunity to learn and network with CGHS students from other disciplines while enrolled in biostatistics, scientific and technical writing, and the medical ethics courses.
