Graduate Nursin
g Programs:
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN):
The MSN (Master's of Science in Nursing) curriculum is designed to prepare nurses for advanced specialty practice in advanced nursing roles and for entry into doctoral study in nursing, if desired. The School of Nursing offers five focal areas for master's studies in nursing: nurse practitioner in either acute care or primary care, clinical nurse specialist, nursing education, nursing informatics, and nursing and health systems management. We also offer a post-baccalaureate certificate to prepare teachers in nursing, as registered nurse first assistants, or an individually designed track.
Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD):
The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing) is designed to prepare professional nurses as scholars, leaders, and researchers who will make a substantive contribution to the body of knowledge for the discipline of nursing and thereby improve health outcomes for those who receive nursing care. The program of study builds on preparation at the master's or baccalaureate level. Graduates are prepared for culturally effective leadership roles in research, education, health policy, and health care. Doctoral students have the opportunity to develop expertise and conduct research in a selected content area.
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP):
The DNP program builds upon the 19 advanced specialty tracks currently offered at UAB for nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse administrators. The DNP is a practice-focused terminal degree to prepare graduates to practice at the highest level in specialty practice or to assume leadership positions in health care.
Graduates of the DNP program will focus on providing care to populations and communities with an emphasis on improving quality and access to underserved, diverse populations.
Post MSN Nurse Practitioner Option:
MSN graduates who wish to take a designated program of study in preparation for sitting for one of the nurse practitioner certifications should apply for non-degree status. Admission is competitive.
Programs of Study for the Post-MSN Nurse Practitioner Specialties include all didactic and clinical practice courses for the selected specialty including the residency. Additional coursework includes NUR 613 Pharmacology and Therapeutics and NUR 614 Advanced Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning. These two courses may be waived if previous coursework has covered the content.
