School of Allied Health and Nursing Programs

Associate Degree Nursing Program (ADN): 2 years 
Nurses function as caregivers and patient advocates in the promotion and restoration of health and the prevention of disease. Nursing practice requires substantial specialized knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and technical skills based on physiological and psycho-social sciences and the growing body of nursing concepts/knowledge. 

The Associate Degree Nursing Program is accredited by:

- The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
- The Maryland Board of Nursing

Practical Nursing Certificate: 1 year
Licensed Practical Nurses function under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or a physician to provide care for clients in a variety of healthcare settings.This program prepares graduates to take the licensing examination (NCLEX-PN). Prospective students may select the program either on admission to the College or after completing core courses, NUR 111: Calculation of Medications in Nursing and NUR 120: Introduction to Nursing Practice.  

The Practical Nursing Certificate is accredited by:
- The Maryland Board of Nursing

Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Dental Hygiene: 2 years 
Dental Hygienists educate patients about the importance of proper dental care and the maintenance of good oral health. Working under the general supervision of a licensed dentist, hygienists remove stains and deposits from teeth, take x-rays, apply preventive agents to teeth, provide patient education, and prepare tests for interpretation and evaluation by the dentist. This program prepares students to work as dental hygienists in private dental offices, hospital clinics, military installations, public schools, industrial clinics, dental auxiliary schools and public health facilities. Acquisition of Dental Hygiene Competency is developed through a combination of college-based lectures and laboratories as well as direct involvement with patient care at the on-site Dental Hygiene Clinic on the Liberty Campus as well as external health care agencies.

Accreditation:
The program is accredited through the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation with the status of "Approval (without reporting requirements)". This accreditation classification is granted to an educational program indicating that the program achieves or exceeds the basic requirements for the accreditation period granted.

Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Board Examination and the Northeast Regional Board Examination for the title Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). Through articulation with several area colleges and universities students may continue their studies to pursue the Bachelor's and/or Master's degree. 

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Physical Therapist Assisting: 2 years
This program prepares students to work as Physical Therapist Assistants in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, extended care and sub-acute facilities, out-patient clinics, private practices, schools and pediatric centers. The program is designed to prepare graduates to become respected members of the Physical Therapy team, providing direct patient care under the general supervision of a Physical Therapist. Acquisition of Physical Therapy competency is developed through a combination of college-based lectures and skills laboratories as well as direct involvement with patient care during part-time and full-time clinical internships. 

Accreditation:
The program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association. Graduates of the Physical Therapist Assistant program are eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) to qualify for licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

Surgical Technologist Associate Degree (A.A.S): 2 years 
This program prepares students for successful employment in an operating room assisting the surgeon and other members of the professional staff with patient care before, during, and after surgery. Through classroom study and clinical fieldwork in area hospitals, students learn surgical asepsis and the preparation and use of instrumentation and equipment. Students completing the program are eligible to take the certifying examination given by the Association of Surgical Technologists.

Students are expected to learn the following within the Surgical Technologist program:
- Human Anatomy
- Preoperative Preparation
- Operative Procedures
- Asepsis
- Emergent Situations

Respiratory Care Associate Degree: 2 years
A respiratory care practitioner provides quality healthcare by delivering medical gases, aerosol and humidity therapies, pulmonary hyperinflation care, patient education, health promotion, mechanical ventilation, and care for artificial airways. In addition, the respiratory care practitioner provides diagnostic and rehabilitation services to the cardiopulmonary patient. Graduates of the respiratory care program are academically qualified to provide respiratory care under the direction of a licensed physician to patients in acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, long-term care centers, physicians’ offices, and home care agencies.

Accreditation:
The Respiratory Care Program at Baltimore City Community College has earned Continuing Accreditation status from its accrediting body, the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

Students are expected to learn the following within the Respiratory Care program:
- Patient Data and Evaluation Recommendations
- Equipment Manipulation, Infection Control, and Quality Control
- Initiation and Modification of Therapeutic Procedures
- Professionalism
