University College Freiburg:
One of the oldest and most renowned higher education institutions in Germany, the University of Freiburg provides a four-year Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). It is hosted by the University College Freiburg (UCF) and started in October 2012 with a pioneer group of 78 students. This is the university's first interdisciplinary, English-taught undergraduate program and the first of its kind in Germany. We welcome students from Germany and international students from around the world.
Against the backdrop of a challenging and exciting period of transformation in European higher education, the idea of a LAS program in Germany, specifically in Freiburg, first emerged several years back. With much enthusiasm and involvement across faculties, we have since established our educational concept and founded the University College Freiburg, a platform for interdisciplinary teaching at the University of Freiburg and the host institution for the LAS program.
The Liberal Arts and Sciences is currently the only progam hosted by the University College Freiburg.
- The University of Freiburg is especially suited to initiate a Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) program at a University College: It is one of Germany’s leading research and higher education institutions and has a longstanding tradition in interdisciplinary research and teaching. We have partnerships with top universities, research institutions, and businesses around the world. Our graduates and faculty members include a number of Nobel laureates, and many are at the top of their fields.
- Situated at the heart of Europe, in direct proximity to both Switzerland and France, Freiburg is one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. The capital of the famous Black Forest region, it is well known for its extremely high quality of life.
- Higher education in Germany receives generous state subsidies, which allow all students, including international students, to take advantage of the incredibly low cost of higher education. Many scholarships are available for qualifi ed international students.
- The University of Freiburg offers a truly cosmopolitan and diverse atmosphere in the middle of one of Germany’s most charming cities. We have close to 3,500 international students on campus and a large number of renowned international scholars as guest professors or full-time faculty,
Reaching across academic fields, the LAS Bachelor's Degree is complementary to the University’s existing disciplinary Bachelor programs. Taught in English, majors include: Culture and History; Life Sciences; Earth and Environmental Sciences; Governance. You can also choose from a range of elective courses.
Developing our own specific perspective on a long tradition of Liberal Education in the United States, and on recent highly successful interpretations of that tradition in the Netherlands, we emphasize problem-orientation, student-centeredness and an international outlook.
Our Students:
The target group for this degree is students with an unusual degree of intellectual curiosity, self-reliance and responsibility, who are looking for problem-oriented work across disciplines and are flexible and open for challenges. Selection places a strong emphasis on personal interviews in order to assess the motivation of applicants and the matching between the program and interested students.
The Liberal Arts and Sciences is currently the only progam hosted by the University College Freiburg.
