Emergency Medical Services / Paramedic Training in California

National College of Technical Instruction, Roseville:
The National College of Technical Instruction (NCTI) is dedicated to the delivery of high-quality education in the field of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in several locations in California as well as throughout the United States. The national headquarters for NCTI are located in Roseville in the metropolitan area of Sacramento, CA. Since 1988, NCTI has been offering specialized instructional programs, including Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, and other emergency services and critical care programs.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Courses:

EMT-Basic Course:
This course fulfills all the training requirements set forth by the State. The EMT Basic course is a hands-on, interactive experience. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the National Registry exam. This can lead to employment in a wide range of job opportunities to include: Ambulance EMT, Fire Fighter EMT, Emergency Room Technician, Private Industry EMT, Special Events Standby EMT (sporting events, concerts, state and county fairs, etc.) and others. During the course students are assigned to 10-12 hours of ride along with AMR ambulance crews. During these sessions students perform patient assessments, assist with patient care (including CPR, C-Spine Immobilization, airway management, etc.) and ride with the crew to deliver patients to local hospitals.

EMT-Paramedic Program:
This course fulfills all the training requirements set forth by the state for Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedics. Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible to take the National Registry exam offered periodically throughout the state. This certification can lead to employment in a wide range of fields to include ambulance or fire paramedic, E.R. technician, special functions paramedic, sporting events, concerts, etc. As NCTI is owned and operated by American Medical Response, Inc. (AMR), employment referrals are a benefit to the NCTI graduate.

EMT Basic Recertification:
The EMT Recertification module is designed for students who possess a current EMT-B card and who need to complete 24 hours of continuing education and sit for the competency-based written and skills certification examination in accordance with the standards of the California State and Health Code, Title 22.

The EMT Refresher module is designed for EMT-B students who need all or only a partial EMT refresher course. This review course will provide the most up-to-date information in accordance with the standards of the California State and Health Code, Title 22.

AHA Core Instructor Course:
The objectives of this course are to provide the opportunity for instructors to improve their instructional skills. Instructors play a critical role in training people to save lives. For students to save lives they must thoroughly learn the skills that instructors teach. The better the instructor, the better chance that more lives are saved. The course takes place in the classroom setting with the use of interactive video based learning. It requires students to make decisions about what constitutes quality instruction and displaying the feedback from their decisions. The course includes a workbook that will be issued to students the day of the course. Students need to attend the entire course. Upon completion the student will be issued a card and is eligible to take an Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Basic Life Support Instructor Course.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor Course (ACLS):
This course is designed for ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) Providers who wish to obtain their instructor certification. Prerequisites: The AHA requires that any students registering for this course MUST have already completed the Core Instructor Course and bring the Certificate of Completion to the Instructor Course. Students must also bring a letter from either a Regional Faculty or a Lead Instructor recommending them for Instructor status.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider or Refresher Course (ACLS):
This recognition course will provide the most recent up-to-date information on acute cardiac care and Advanced Cardiac Life Support in accordance with the standards of the American Heart Association. Information on advanced airway management, intubation, dysrhythmia interpretation, emergency pharmacology, electrical therapy and myocardial infarctions will be presented in a didactic format and in skill practice stations.
Prerequisites: Students need to have basic training in EKG Interpretation and Emergency Pharmacology prior to attending this course as it covers these topics in review form only. Students must be advanced life support providers.

Advanced Medical Life Support Refresher Course (AMLS):
This course gives students the ability to integrate the knowledge presented into a practical format for application in both the in/out of hospital settings. The student will learn to apply critical thinking skills to integrate pathophysiology with the assessment findings of a medical patient; determine and differentiate between actual and potential patient problems; advance the provider’s ability to conduct a competenet medical examination that utilizes proper diagnostic skills, critical thinking and interventions; advance the provider’s ability to utilize problem-solving strategies in interventions and management alternatives; advance the provider’s ability to communicate the pertinent findings and interventions to the receiving faculty.

The AMLS Refresher course is a one-day (8 hour) in-depth study of medical emergencies. This course emphasizes a pragmatic approach and format, based on teaching the provider what they need to know. The curriculum is designed to allow for a minimal amount of lecture and an ample amount of actual hands-on physical assessment of patients.

International Trauma Life Support Provider or Refresher (ITLS):
"International Trauma Life Support" was formerly known as "Basic Trauma Life Support." The course content has gone unchanged and should still be accepted by any agency or entity requesting this certification.

The International Trauma Life Support Provider or Refresher course for Paramedics and Advanced EMS Providers is a comprehensive course covering the skills necessary for rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and transportation of trauma patients. Created for the advanced EMT, paramedic and trauma nurse, the primary objectives of the course are to teach the correct sequence of evaluation and the techniques of resuscitation and packaging a patient.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider or Refresher Course (PALS):
This provider/refresher course will provide the student with 1)The information needed for recognizing the infant or child at risk of cardiopulmonary arrest, 2)Information and strategies for preventing cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary for resuscitation and stabilizing the infant or child in respiratory failure, shock or cardiopulmonary arrest.
