Postdoc in "Development and (X-ray based) analysis of materials systems for space applications"
100 % full time
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting‑edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well‑being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The Center for X-ray Analytics develops X-ray methodologies for understanding structural behaviour in materials science. We focus on the evaluation of the structure‑property relationship in applications such as biomedicine and space. In the frame of an industrial project, we are looking for a postdoc holding a PhD in material science, physics or chemistry, with a clear link to X-ray based analytical methods, especially to X-ray diffraction and, if possible, X-ray imaging.
We expect the candidate’s enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work related to Space sciences. The working place will be Dübendorf / Zurich.
- Develop new materials concepts in the space domain with partners from Empa internal and external partners.
- Develop characterization strategies mainly based on our non‑destructive X‑ray based methods: X‑ray diffraction, scattering & imaging.
- Actively interact with and support scientific collaborators and industrial partners.
- Present scientific results through publications and at conferences.
- PhD degree in materials science, physics or chemistry.
- Deep knowledge in X‑ray diffraction and scattering methods.
- Additional knowledge in X‑ray imaging and microscopy techniques is a big plus.
- Experienced in project management and writing scientific publications.
- Fluent in English;
German would be a plus; enjoying a multicultural environment.
We offer this postdoc position at a research institution with excellent infrastructure and a broad interdisciplinary surrounding. The position is available for the 1st of March 2026 or upon agreement and will be initially limited to one year with a performance‑based possibility for contract extension.
