The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Northern Illinois University (NIU), invites applications for instructor positions to create a pool for advance and short notice hiring. These will be part or full‑time temporary instructor positions. Start dates vary based on programmatic needs.
We are seeking potential candidates to offer high‑quality teaching in American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish who fully embrace NIU’s mission of providing opportunity to a diverse student body. Candidates must demonstrate native or near‑native fluency in the target language and should practice current foreign language teaching methodologies centered on a communicative approach.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeaching load will be no more than 12 credit hours during fall semester and no more than 12 credit hours during spring semester; other related duties may be assigned.
MinimumRequired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in the target language
- Expertise or evident potential for quality teaching in the target language at the undergraduate level.

- Effective interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to working effectively in a collegial, multicultural environment.

- Teaching statement (2‑page limit and should describe the applicant’s undergraduate teaching interests and experiences both existing and future courses and convey the candidate’s understanding of evidence‑based teaching practices)
- Contributions to diversity statement (2‑page limit and applicants are encouraged to describe how their past, present or potential teaching and life experiences will inform their efforts to advance equity for diverse communities, including populations that are historically under‑represented or marginalized in the field, to provide a welcoming, inclusive learning environment for all students)
