Title
Substitute Teacher

Training Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in any field of study; transcripts required
- BCI & FBI background checks dated within the past 12 months; on file with the Ohio Department of Education; can be conducted by Zanesville City Schools Administration Building (cost $25 for BCI and $25 for FBI)
- Substitute Teaching License or copy of Teaching License; first‑time and renewal applications completed online at the Ohio Department of Education; a $25 fee is required and must be paid directly to the Ohio Department of Education

Substitute Teachers are responsible for creating and maintaining a classroom environment that is effective, safe, and conducive to learning.
Work Environment, Characteristics and Conditions- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
- Occasional interaction with unruly children and adults
- Hand motions: typing, writing, etc.
- Requirements to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch, crouch, kneel, climb and stoop
- Lift, carry, push and pull supplies and equipment up to 50 pounds
- Familiarize yourself with all schools where you may substitute teach
- Respond to calls to substitute unless hindered by illness or emergency
- Dress professionally, set a good example for students
- Report promptly to the main office upon arrival; learn routine procedures (class schedules, lunch times, student referrals)
- Familiarize with fire and emergency drill procedures; account for all students during drills
- Assume all responsibilities of the regular teacher, including special duties; a substitute is not employed merely to maintain order
- Remain at the school site for the entire length of the teacher day
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information
- Maintain professional and ethical standards with students, parents, and staff
- Review and follow the lesson plans furnished by the regular teacher; secure necessary materials and equipment; start class promptly; contact principal if plans are unavailable; prepare alternative activities for emergencies
- Keep all students under supervision at all times; never leave a class unattended
- Observe principles of good classroom control and management; if a problem occurs that you cannot manage, contact principal or designee immediately; do not create situations that challenge your authority
- Leave the classroom in proper order; you are legally responsible for pupils, equipment, and materials
- Prepare a written account summarizing classroom activities, assignments, and comments for the regular teacher
- Accurately report class and homeroom attendance according to school procedures
- Notify school administration immediately should an accident, illness or discipline problem occur
- Zanesville High School: 7:45 AM – 2:26 PM (sub arrival 7:35 AM)
- Zanesville Middle School: 7:45 AM – 2:35 PM (sub arrival 7:35 AM)
- Elementary Schools: 8:45 AM – 3:10 PM (sub arrival 8:30 AM)
