Listed is the base hiring salary range offered for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to skills and experience. The salary range listed is just one component of the total rewards/compensation package offered to candidates.

The nurse extern I, under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), is responsible for providing appropriate nursing care to patients. The nurse extern I's care includes providing basic data collection and documentation of patient progress; observing, administering and documenting approved nursing procedures; attending to patients' comfort needs and performing specific duties related to the assigned nursing unit. A registered nurse shall supervise an extern employed and meeting minimum job requirements.
The extern must show proof of having completed didactic instruction with clinical validation in fundamental nursing skills and satisfactory completion of clinical experience in the nursing program. The nurse extern, under the supervision of a registered nurse, may perform other skills for which she/he has received didactic and clinical instruction in his/her program including, medication administration. All skills must be validated by a qualified preceptor and documented in accordance with the organization policies.

Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, works on representing the concerns of the patient/family and nursing staff; serving as an agent in identifying and helping to resolve ethical and clinical concerns within the clinical setting. Identifies the client/family's need for basic information in a clear, understandable language as evidenced by documentation and team feedback. Demonstrates and understands the concept and importance of client/family advocacy.
Maintains and is respectful of client confidentiality.
Response to Diversity:
Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, collaborates in recognizing and differences to incorporate in the plan of care. Differences may include, but are not limited to, cultural differences, spiritual beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, lifestyle, socioeconomic status, age and values. Demonstrates respectful behavior towards client/family/team diversity. Assesses cultural diversity through communication with client and family and in simulation situations.
Clinical Inquiry:
Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, recommends practice changes through research and evidence based practices. Reads and follows organizational policies and procedures. Appropriately uses the nursing process. Asks for personal feedback on clinical practice as evidenced by preceptor/team feedback. Keeps within their scope of practice, providing direct patient care as delegated by the RN, in a timely, efficient and respectful manner.
Clinical Judgment:
Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, demonstrates clinical reasoning, which includes clinical decision making and critical thinking through a process of integrating formal knowledge. Demonstrates ability to seek appropriate resources when needed and use of evidenced based practice as applicable for situation. Demonstrates commitment to patients by participation in the implementation of the nursing process in providing patient care under the direction of the RN preceptor.
Seeks advice for situations not familiar to them.
Caring Practice:
Under the supervision or guidance of a registered nurse, demonstrates nursing activities that create a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff, with the goal of promoting comfort and healing. Includes, but is not limited to engagement and responsiveness of caregivers, including family and healthcare personnel. assessments focusing on the physical and psychosocial needs of the patient in an ongoing and systematic manner as evidenced by documentation and team feedback.
Participates with preceptor in formulating a plan of care which is prioritized and based on nursing assessment. Care is based on plan of care. Maintains a safe physical environment. Acknowledges patient's/families need for comfort. Demonstrates compassion and an interest for clinical inquiry.

Treats patients and others with compassion, courtesy, respect and caring. Responds quickly and appropriately to customer requests.
