Summary

The Monitor Technician partners with team members to meet the needs of the customer and the patient care area, and registers patients for admissions into assigned area. The Monitor Tech performs a variety of basic clerical tasks such as answering phones, transferring patients, monitoring telemetry rhythms, and patient status. This individual communicates clearly and effectively through established systems, concerning relevant information with customers and co-workers.

The Monitor Tech demonstrates sensitivity in dealing with the special needs of specific age groups, patient population with various deadlines, and supports other departments as needed to coordinate various patient services.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors cardiac rhythms to include running monitor strips as required by unit standards and as needed according to patient condition, documenting rhythm information at specified frequencies, posting rhythm strips with appropriate patient identifiers as specified through workflows and scanning rhythm strips into the health record to ensure accurate and timely information to ensure safe patient care.
  • Cleans and maintains the basic operating functions for transmitters and ensures that broken and/or lost devices are immediately communicated to Bio-Med, Director and Charge Nurse and reports immediately aberrant rhythms or rhythm changes to the Registered Nurse caring for the patients evidenced by documentation.
  • Responds to codes timely and according to policy standards.
  • Communicates effectively supporting the needs of the patient and the unit. Exhibits excellence in customer service through appropriate attitude and interaction with all patients, visitors and staff, acts as a unit receptionist greeting, and directing visitors, physicians or staff unaccustomed to their unit.
  • Answers phones in a clear, professional manner ensuring all calls are directed to appropriate persons in a timely manner, and provides telephone services by giving information, paging returning calls, contacting outside entities as directed, communicates clearly, and effectively all relevant information to appropriate persons.
  • Serves as a link in the communication chain ensuring information is transmitted between nursing and hospital team, physicians, patients, family members and other guests. Reports all information to ensure timely completion of tasks to oncoming shift Monitor Tech and others as needed; scans and indexes medical documents, manages supply and nourishment orders, answers call lights promptly, directs questions to the appropriate person, and maintains unit staff assignment as needed.
  • Ensures completion of registration paperwork and related records; identifies medical record documents, scans, indexes, performs quality review and storage of scanned documents; enters all appropriate information into computer systems within required time frames to ensure proper processing of patient records and accounts.
  • Participates in QA activities by performing chart or other audits to ensure a complete and concise medical record; notifies ancillary departments of patient service needs; assists with transfers and completes forms such as birth certificates, living wills, organ donations, consents, and notarized documents as requested.
  • Coordinates bed placement and patient assignment with nursing staff in collaboration with Charge Nurse and/or House Resource Supervisor; handles patient communications such as thank you cards upon discharge.
  • Coordinates Bio-Med and Maintenance work orders and orders supplies and equipment for patient care and staff, ensuring supplies are available in each designated area.
