Summary:

The Monitor Technician partners with team members to meet the needs of the customer and the patient care area, and registers patients for admissions into the assigned area. The Monitor Tech performs a variety of basic clerical tasks such as answering phones, transferring patients, monitoring telemetry rhythms, and patient status. This individual communicates clearly and effectively through established systems, concerning relevant information with customers and co‑workers.

The Monitor Tech demonstrates sensitivity in dealing with the special needs of specific age groups, patient populations with various deadlines, and supports other departments as needed to coordinate patient services.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors cardiac rhythms, runs monitor strips as required by unit standards and patient condition, documents rhythm information at specified frequencies, posts rhythm strips with patient identifiers, and scans rhythm strips into the health record to ensure accurate and timely information for safe patient care.
  • Cleans and maintains basic operating functions for transmitters; reports broken or lost devices to Bio-Med, Director, and Charge Nurse; reports aberrant rhythms or rhythm changes to the RN caring for the patient.
  • Responds to codes timely and according to policy standards.
  • Communicates effectively to support the needs of the patient and the unit; provides excellent customer service and acts as a unit receptionist greeting and directing visitors, physicians, or staff as needed.
  • Answers phones in a clear, professional manner and directs calls appropriately; provides telephone services and communicates information to the appropriate persons (verbally, electronically, or in writing).
  • Serves as a key link in the communication chain between nursing, hospital team, physicians, patients, and family members; maintains unit staff assignments on the intranet and updates as necessary; demonstrates YRMC values.
  • Ensures completion of registration paperwork and related tasks; identifies medical record documents, scans and indexes, performs quality review, and stores scanned documents; enters all appropriate information into the computer system within required time frames.
  • Participates in QA activities by performing chart or other audits; coordinates patient services with ancillary departments; assists with obtaining necessary forms (birth certificates, living wills, organ donations, consents, notarized documents) as requested.
  • Coordinates bed placement and patient assignments with nursing staff; handles discharge communications and related tasks as appropriate.
  • Coordinates Bio-Med and Maintenance work orders and ensures necessary supplies are available in designated areas.
  • Operates and assists with equipment (telephones, paging system, fax, printer, copier, tube system, laser labeler, Chartmaxx, etc.); maintains departmental logs as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
