We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Street Maintenance Worker working with the department of Public Works. The ideal candidate will have construction or maintenance experience in asphalt roads, concrete work, or traffic control signs and markings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in maintaining, repairing, and constructing streets, roadways, infrastructure, properties, and signage for the Public Works Department (PWD), in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Assists with skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance and technical work.
  • Assists with seasonal street maintenance; stripes and sweeps streets and clears foliage and debris.
  • Assists with set up of traffic control zones at Public Works construction sites to minimize risk of accidents and enhance safety of work crews; assists with traffic flagging as needed.
  • Learns to fabricate, maintain, repair and replace street signs.
  • Operates a variety of trucks and equipment to repair and maintain roads and roadways; hauls materials and equipment to job sites; repairs street surfaces, patches asphalt; installs and repairs concrete components, performs fog sealing and crack sealing functions.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations and keeps work area and equipment in safe operating condition, reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems, and emergency situations.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs within scope of authority, and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; notifies supervisor of safety hazards, equipment problems, and emergency situations.
  • Assists with Solid Waste programs.
  • Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments; promotes a culture of safety.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND one year of construction or maintenance experience in asphalt roads, concrete work or traffic control signs and markings; OR internal applicants with one calendar year of work in maintenance of retention basin, asphalt roads, concrete work or traffic control signs and markings; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge Of
  • City policies and procedures.
  • City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Methods used in infrastructure construction and maintenance.
  • Methods used in traffic control signing and marking operations.
  • Traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations.
  • Proper use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
  • City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and facility locations.
Skill In
  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Identifying unsafe conditions and work site problems.
  • Maintaining vehicles and specialized equipment.
  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers.
  • Following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
License and Certification Requirements

A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required; OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER), NIMS Emergency Response, Arizona Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), MUTCD certifications in work zone traffic control, specific technical training or certifications from OSHA, ATSSA, IMSA, and ADOT pesticide license may be required.
