Overview
GENERAL PURPOSE Under the direction of the Special Operations Supervisor, the Swim Instructor is responsible for the safeguarding and education of all swim lesson participants. The swim instructor is responsible for creating a positive and fun learning environment, while overseeing participant safety. This position requires morning and evening work. The swim instructor is also required to work afternoon, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as a lifeguard at the City of Yukon pools.
Responsibilities- Demonstrates skills during swim lessons instruction
- Works independently and possesses energy and enthusiasm
- Works hours as scheduled which includes beginning and ending class on time, remaining after class to answer participant and/or parent questions, and cleaning up supplies
- Educates participants on proper technique and promotes water safety
- Provides for the health and safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe. Maintains cleanliness and safety of pools and equipment.
- Submits completed report cards, skills sheets, and attendance information on time
- Delivers excellent customer service to all that utilize the facility
- Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency
- Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times
- Attends mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Delivers superior customer service to all that utilize the facility while presenting a professional image and attitude
- Provides for the safety of pool patrons while in the water and on the deck by maintaining effective scanning of the assigned zone and providing emergency care as needed
- Responds quickly and efficiently to emergency situations following established procedures laid out by the American Red Cross, and provides rescue breathing, CPR, and First Aid as needed
- Accurately documents accidents/incidents on the proper form(s)
- Maintains current knowledge of all emergency procedures within the designated area
- Fairly enforces the rules and regulations of the facilities while cautioning patrons regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards
- Attends all scheduled shifts, trainings, and team meetings on-time and prepared
- Maintains a safe and clean swimming environment, both indoor and outdoor, which includes cleaning restrooms, vacuuming, skimming, brushing the pool, picking up trash, emptying trash cans, and securing the areas during and after pool operations
- Accurately completes daily facility and equipment inspection forms
- Completes hourly chemical testing and reports any abnormalities to management immediately
- This is not an all-inclusive list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities, and all staff will be required to perform other duties as assigned
- 16 years of age or older
- Must have good interpersonal relationship skills
- Proficient in swimming strokes – front crawl, back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke
- Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate skills required while using teaching aids such as kickboards and diving rings
- Ability to work independently
- Previous swim instruction experience
- Previous experience as an American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, or Star Guard Elite Lifeguard
- Provided for free by the City of Yukon Parks and Recreation Department
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification
- Experience in providing quality customer service
- Must be in good physical condition
- Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shapes; depth perception, peripheral vision, and have the ability to adjust focus. Vision must be corrected or uncorrected to at least 20/25
- Must be willing to periodically be available for call outs during off duty hours
- Works in variety of weather conditions including heat and rain
- Exposure to allergy causing agents such as insect stings, poison ivy, etc.
- Subject to working in a confined area near others
- Subject to sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time
- Exposed to intermittent or continued loud and insistent noises
- Exposure to uneven and slippery surfaces
- Mobility to frequently move one s body from place to place
- Hearing and speech to communicate clearly and distinctly in English, by telephone and in person, within the confinement of a semi-noisy environment
- Have the ability to run, swim, paddle, and walk long distances
- Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms
- Use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate lifesaving equipment
- Regularly lifts, pushes, or pulls persons or equipment over 100 pounds as a team
