General Purpose
Under the direction of the Special Operations Supervisor, the Head Lifeguard is tasked with assisting the pool leadership staff with the supervision of aquatic personnel during the daily operation of the City of Yukon Aquatic Facilities. The Head Lifeguard is expected to establish a culture that places safety first while encouraging creative thinking, teamwork, and open communication. The Head Lifeguard will also serve as the front-line role model for the lifeguarding team, and as such must be cognizant of all policies, regulations, and programming standards, and adhere to them.
This position requires weekend, evening, and holiday work.
- Provides for the safety of pool patrons while in the water and on the deck by maintaining effective scanning of the assigned zone and providing emergency care as needed.
- Responds quickly to emergency situations following established procedures laid out by the American Red Cross, and provides rescue breathing, CPR, and First Aid as needed.
- Accurately documents accidents/incidents on the proper form.
- Maintains current knowledge of all emergency procedures within the designated area.
- Fairly enforces the rules and regulations of the facilities while cautioning patrons regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards.
- Attends all scheduled shifts, trainings, and team meetings on-time and prepared.
- Maintains a safe and clean swim environment, both indoor and outdoor, which includes cleaning restrooms, vacuuming, skimming, brushing the pool, picking up trash, emptying trash cans, and securing the areas during and after pool operations.
- Accurately completes daily facility and equipment inspection forms.
- Completes hourly chemical testing and reports any abnormalities to management immediately.
- Assists the Aquatics Coordinator and Pool Manager with the development and execution of all lifeguard trainings, in-services, and on-site trainings.
- Develops daily staffing assignments and ensures that all Department of Labor breaks and meal laws are being enforced.
- Strives to foster effective relationships with patrons and special interest groups.
- Maintains current knowledge of departmental programming and assists the front gate team and patrons in registrations as required.
- This is not an all-inclusive list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities, and all staff will be required to perform other duties as assigned.
- 18 years of age or older
- Previous lifeguard experience as an American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, Star Guard Elite Lifeguard or Instructor, or other comparable certifying organization
- Must have good interpersonal relationship and organizational skills
- Must be self-motivated, professional, and be able to work as part of a team
- Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for work performed
- Must be willing to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification (paid for by the City of Yukon)
- Previous experience in exercising judgment, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public
- Previous experience in pool maintenance practices
- Provided free by the City of Yukon Parks and Recreation Department
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification
- Be in good physical condition
- Have the ability to run, swim, paddle, and walk long distances
- Be able to stand and sit for extended periods
- Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms
- Talk and hear both in person from close and long distances and by phone
- Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate lifesaving equipment
- Regularly lifts, pushes, or pulls persons or equipment over 100 pounds as a team
- Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shapes; depth perception, peripheral vision, and have the ability to adjust focus
- Vision must be corrected or uncorrected to at least 20/25
- Employee will regularly work under outdoor weather conditions and routinely be exposed to the sun, and may be exposed to extreme heat
- Occasionally work on uneven and/or slippery surfaces
- Lifeguard on stand in rotation when needed
