Job Description

JOB TITLE: BEHAVIOR SUPPORT PARAPROFESSIONAL

JOB SUMMARY: This person will provide support to students with disabilities who exhibit significant physical aggression due to the severity of their disability. In a one or small group setting, this person must be willing to work with students who may demonstrate physical aggression, engage in frequent outbursts, and who may be emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Work with individual children or small groups of children to reinforce new skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
  • Provide verbal support, prompting, redirection, and modeling to help the students access the curriculum and interact with certified staff members and learning activities.
  • Work cooperatively with other paraprofessionals, certified and licensed staff to facilitate positive interactions for the student with all staff and the ability to take instructions from a variety of school staff who are responsible for the student’s education.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher and the special services program coordinator for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Documents student’s daily activities (e.g. behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) for the purpose of completing daily logs and student’s hourly activities.
  • Implements under the supervision of the Special Services Program Coordinator, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts and maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Create and hold professional development for incoming paraprofessionals.
  • Effective communication with the special services program coordinator, teacher, building staff and parents.
  • Assists in de‑escalating challenging behaviors utilizing verbal de‑escalation strategies to prevent further escalation.
  • Daily data collection will be required.
  • Additional professional development as determined by the district to encourage appropriate positive behavior interventions and implementation.

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent
  • Must have 48 hours of transcripted college credit; or must have passed, or be able to pass, the Para Pro Test
  • Experience working with students in a school or clinical setting who demonstrate at‑risk behaviors is preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record; must have reliable transportation
  • CPR Certification, or willingness and ability to obtain
  • CPI Certification, or willingness and ability to obtain

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or restrain students in excess of 100 pounds.
  • Exert up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and/or to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects and provide redirection.
  • Significant portion of each work day will be spent working with students who may demonstrate physical aggression, engage in frequent outbursts, and who may be emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired.
