Job Summary — Data Destruction Technician I (Tier
1)

The Data Destruction Technician I is an entry‑level technician responsible for supporting secure data sanitization and destruction activities within PlanITROI’s IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) operations. This position focuses on executing standardized data erasure and physical destruction processes under supervision to ensure client data is securely handled and compliant with company and industry requirements.

Responsibilities include performing certified data wiping using approved software, physically destroying data‑bearing media when required, monitoring erasure processes, recording asset information within the ERP system, and maintaining strict chain‑of‑custody procedures. The technician also performs basic asset grading and escalates exceptions or potential data security risks. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to established procedures, and the ability to operate effectively within a structured production environment.

This is a full‑time, onsite temporary‑to‑permanent position, with eligibility for permanent employment consideration after a 90‑day evaluation period.

Responsibilities Data Security & Sanitization
  • Perform certified data erasure using approved erasure software in accordance with client commitments and compliance standards.
  • Physically destroy data‑bearing components (HDDs, SSDs, and flash media) through approved shredding or destruction processes when required.
  • Monitor erasure software dashboards to ensure successful completion, validation, and exception management.
  • Image devices as required to support redeployment or resale channels.
  • Maintain full chain‑of‑custody accountability throughout the data destruction process.
Asset Evaluation & Processing
  • Conduct physical inspection and grading of laptops, desktops, tablets, mobile devices, servers, storage arrays, and networking equipment.
  • Determine appropriate downstream routing, including redeploy, refurbish, harvest, recycle, or destroy.
  • Identify and elevate non‑conforming assets or potential data security risks.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Accurately record asset condition, serial numbers, erasure results, and disposition codes within ERP system.
  • Maintain detailed audit trails supporting client reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Adhere to all internal Quality Control, Information Security, and safety standards.
Continuous Improvement & Operational Support
  • Recommend process improvements that enhance productivity, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Audit, Refurbishment, and Quality Control teams to maintain operational flow.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support operational excellence.
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Technical Certificate or coursework in Information Technology, Electronics, or Computer Repair preferred
  • 1‑2 years’ experience in: ITAD, Electronics processing, Computer repair, or technical handling environments
  • A+ Certification (or working toward) preferred but not required
  • Basic understanding of computer hardware components: HDDs / SSDs, Laptops & desktops, Mobile devices
  • Ability to operate certified data erasure software under supervision
  • Basic device booting and BIOS access knowledge
  • Understanding of storage media types and handling requirements
  • Ability to follow physical destruction procedures safely
  • Basic asset grading and identification skills
  • Accurate serial number capture and asset tracking
  • ERP or production system data entry
  • Chain‑of‑custody awareness
