Summary Of Primary Function/General Purpose Of Position

The Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) delivers patient care utilizing the nursing process through data collection and assessment, identifying and determining priority of patient’s problems/needs, and evaluating the process and outcome of nursing care. The RN coordinates, provides, and directs patient teaching activities and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyze assessment data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate treatment effectiveness.
  • Administer medications safely, consistent with state practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures.
  • Serve as point of contact for patient care coordination across hospital departments.
  • Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement.
  • Serve as patient advocate in collaboration with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics teams.
  • Serve as a point of contact for family members or caregivers.
  • Clinically manage patients with multi-organ failure and/or multisystem trauma.
  • Use the AACN Synergy Model to restore, support, promote, rehabilitate, or palliate to maintain physiologic, psychologic, and psychosocial stability across the lifespan.
  • Synthesize and prioritize information to take immediate evidence‑based, patient‑focused action using clinical judgment.
  • Anticipate and respond with confidence to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Respond to the unique needs of patients and families coping with unanticipated illness or injury and advocate for their quality‑of‑life choices.
  • Practice and deliver care in accordance with BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model core concepts.
Licensing/Certification
  • Current RN license in state of work or covered by compact (required).
  • BLS Basic Life Support or ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred at hire; ACLS required within 6 months).
  • CCRN Critical Care Registered Nurse (preferred).
  • PCCN Progressive Care Certified Nurse (preferred).
  • National Institute of Health (NIH) Stroke Certification (preferred).
Education
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing (preferred).
Work Experience
  • 6 months RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred).
Training
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
  • Critical Care Course (preferred).
Skills
  • Assign patient care according to nursing skill, knowledge, and scope of practice.
  • Orient, facilitate learning experience, and provide education to nursing staff and others.
  • Possess clinical knowledge, skills, and competency aligned with current standards of practice.
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient’s clinical condition and psychosocial needs.
  • Safely and efficiently develop, implement, and prioritize plan of care.
  • Apply nursing process in patient care delivery.
  • Assess patient’s physical and emotional responses to treatment to evaluate effectiveness.
  • Assist patient and family in coping with illness.
  • Collaborate with other professionals for coordinated care.
  • Publish strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Apply cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
  • Recognize limitations and seek assistance to perform safely.
  • Engage in personal and professional growth through educational programs.
