Unit Information
  • 26 beds
  • 1:4/5 nurse to patient ratio without LPNs; 1:6/7 if LPNs are present (team nursing)
  • Newly remodeled unit with almost all private rooms
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire; ANCC certification encouraged
  • Strong weekend‑only program, with scheduled shifts every other weekend
  • Patients are monitored 24/7; practice includes multi‑system organ failure and multisystem trauma management
Shift / Schedule
  • Full‑time: 36 weekly hours
  • Shifts:

    7 pm – 7 am and 7 am – 7 pm
  • Scheduled shifts every other weekend
Summary of Primary Function / General Purpose of Position

The Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) delivers patient care using the nursing process—data collection, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team. The RN coordinates patient teaching, directs care by health team members, and serves as a patient safety advocate in quality improvement and ethical practice.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, create and implement care plans, and evaluate effectiveness
  • Administer medications safely per state and BSMH policies
  • Serve as point of contact for care coordination across hospital departments
  • Act as patient safety advocate through ongoing quality improvement
  • Collaborate with spiritual, palliative, and ethics teams and family members
  • Clinically manage patients with multi‑system organ failure or multisystem trauma
  • Apply the AACN Synergy Model to support, rehabilitate, or palliate patients across the lifespan
  • Use evidence‑based, patient‑focused decision making and rapid response to changing conditions
  • Advocate for patient and family choices regarding quality of life
  • Practice in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model core concepts
Licensing / Certification
  • Current RN license in state of employment (or covered by compact; required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support or ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support preferred at hire; ACLS required within 6 months
  • CCRN Critical Care Registered Nurse preferred
  • PCCN Progressive Care Certified Nurse preferred
  • NIH Stroke Certification preferred
Education
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing preferred
Work Experience
  • 1 year of RN experience (required); new grads and nurses with less than 1 year accepted
  • 6 months RN experience in an acute‑care hospital setting preferred
Training
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training preferred
  • Critical Care Course preferred
