Support Workers – York

We are looking to grow our team of dedicated, caring and enthusiastic support workers. You will be working with a diverse group of people, each with their own unique abilities and needs. You will be expected to provide an outstanding level of support that will help to ensure the people we support live a happy life. You will have excellent communication skills and a naturally caring and patient personality.

Typical Responsibilities
  • Supporting people to live independently: budget management, paying bills, housework, organising appointments and cooking healthy meals.
  • Excellent communication skills and relationship building: helping people to understand the world around them and promoting positive relationships.
  • Community & Social Inclusion: supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and social events to promote life skills and individuality.
  • Personal care: helping people to get ready for the day, including prompting medication, assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom. (

    Note:

    not all roles include high levels of personal care.)

Shifts will be spread across mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and bank holidays, so flexibility is key. Certain services will also have sleep‑in shifts or waking night shifts. Rotas are prepared at least four weeks in advance so you can plan your personal and social life.

What We’re Looking For
  • A genuine passion for supporting others.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build meaningful relationships.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • A positive and empathetic attitude towards individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Drivers are essential for this service.
  • Experience with in the care sector is an advantage but not a necessity; training will be provided.

Applicants must already have the legal right to work in the UK. This position does not meet the minimum salary requirements for a Health and Care visa under the UK Skilled Worker route, and Mencap is unable to offer sponsorship for this role. Applicants must also have an enhanced DBS check and suitable references.
