Finance & Payroll Assistant – York – £30,000

Chase & Holland are excited to be recruiting on behalf of their client for a confident and proactive Finance & Payroll Assistant to join their collaborative finance team in York.

This is a varied and responsible position within a supportive, smaller organisation, offering valuable exposure across financial reporting, planning, payroll and core finance operations. The successful candidate will work closely with the Finance Manager and gain broad, hands-on experience within a professional and well-structured finance function.

Finance & Payroll Assistant Responsibilities:
Assist with month-end, quarterly and year-end processes, ensuring strong financial controls
Contribute to financial planning, analysis and performance monitoring
Complete journals, reconciliations, and maintain accurate financial records
Reconcile income and WIP, investigating and resolving discrepancies
Support financial reporting and regulatory requirements across two FCA-regulated entities
Oversee core payroll processes, working with HR and an outsourced provider
Handle payroll queries professionally and confidentially
Support audit and compliance activities
Provide guidance to a finance apprentice and contribute to process improvements

Required

Skills & Experience:

Payroll and accounting experience (AAT Level 4 qualified or studying preferred)
Strong IT/Systems experience including Excel
Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills
High level of accuracy and attention to detail
Confidence to take ownership of responsibilities
Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach
A dependable nature with strong accountability
