Our client is a leading operator within the waste management and environmental services sector, specialising in solvent recovery and hazardous waste treatment. With a strong focus on compliance, innovation, and sustainability, the company provides high-quality services to clients across the UK. They are now looking for a Waste Transfer Station Chemist to manage operations at their York site.
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Management Team, the Waste Transfer Station Chemist will take full responsibility for managing the Waste Transfer Station (WTS) will ensure the site operates safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with environmental and health & safety legislation.
This role includes overseeing laboratory testing routines to verify incoming wastes, ensuring that materials are correctly classified and non-compliant loads are refused. Working closely with the Business Support Manager and the Waste Business Development Manager, you will also help to support customers and maintain strong operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage the annual WTS budget, controlling operational, labour, and general costs.
* Ensure compliance with all Health & Safety and Environmental Agency standards.
* Oversee site operations to ensure adherence to licences, permits, and statutory requirements.
* Manage and develop a team including the Waste Chemist, Waste Supervisor, and Waste Bay Operatives.
* Maintain exceptional housekeeping and operational standards across the facility.
* Monitor and control aged stock levels and valuation in line with disposal costs.
* Maximise profitability of waste streams and collaborate with sales teams to grow the WTS business.
* Develop new waste outlets and identify more cost-effective disposal routes.
* Manage relationships with key contractors.
* Maintain accurate records and ensure all documentation meets legal and company requirements.
Requirements
* Ideally, though not essential, you will hold a valid COTC certificate.
* Proven experience in waste transfer station management.
* Strong knowledge of hazardous waste disposal and relevant legislation.
* Demonstrated management and leadership experience, with the ability to motivate a team.
* Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
* Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
