About the Department — Magistrates are county judges that are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor upon the advice and consent of the South Carolina Senate. Magistrates serve the county in which they are appointed and exercise county wide jurisdiction. Magistrates preside over civil, criminal and traffic cases; consider petitions for restraining orders; issue search and arrest warrants and conduct bond hearings;

preliminary hearings; bench trials; and jury trials. Magistrate Courts exercise jurisdiction in civil cases when the amount in controversy does not exceed $7,500 per side. Civil lawsuits may be filed in the Township in which the Defendant or Business is located. We invite you to apply to join our team as a Constable II within the York Magistrate Court. The purpose of this position is to ensure the security of the court, judge, and all personnel in and around the courthouse and related facilities.

Serves process of the court including, but not limited to eviction notices, subpoenas, summons and complaints, claim and delivery orders.

Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 202 — $21.40 - $25.68 per hour. Salary is determined based on qualifications. Position is full-time (40 hours weekly), non-exempt and work schedule is Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintains and provides physical security to the court, its staff, and facilities.
  • Serves various legal process of the court.
  • Conducts physical evictions of undesired tenants from rental properties.
  • Recovers property awarded to plaintiffs from court cases and claim orders.
  • Maintains a certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Coordinates court time with State, county and local law enforcement for trial scheduling.
  • Coordinates improvements and physical repairs to the court building with York County building maintenance staff and contractors and other vendors. Provides assistance to the public in preparation of documents for court and answers inquiries about the processes and actions of the court.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Education And Experience

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of law enforcement experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Certifications And Licenses
