SummaryCatawba Nuclear Plant is seeking one Mechanical Systems Engineer to join the Plant Engineering – Design Support Engineering team. These roles offer the opportunity to contribute to the long‑term reliability and performance of critical components and plant systems—including valves, heaters, heat exchangers, fire protection, and several nuclear primary systems—within a highly regulated and technically rigorous environment. As part of the engineering team the candidate will directly support design changes, provide technical oversight and engineering support to operations and maintenance organizations, and set direction for the strategic long‑term planning of power plant equipment to ensure optimum equipment reliability.
These are junior‑level positions. Incumbents are expected to use engineering practices to research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and present them to engineering and site management. Both positions offer a 4‑day 10‑hour workweek (Mon‑Thurs) with a hybrid schedule (at least 2 of 4 days are in the office). - Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in and outside the scope of typical responsibility.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non‑routine engineering projects with minimal oversight, independently manages project schedules and interfaces, and is competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Applies fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; is proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to coordinate work activities, demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills, and maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

- Graduation from a four‑year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Proficient in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities, which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on‑call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- An office environment with some routine work in the plant to conduct inspections and/or walkdowns.
- Hybrid work posture:
At least 2 days per week are supported on‑site at the Catawba Nuclear Station after the onboarding period.
