Since 1970, Project Hope Day Camp has provided children from low-income families in Lackawanna County with a safe, supportive, and enriching summer experience. Campers are transported daily to Camp UNC in Tunkhannock, PA, where they participate in a traditional day camp program that includes mindfulness practices, arts and crafts, environmental studies, sports, an Outdoor Adventure Learning Course, and other recreational activities.
At Project Hope, campers build confidence, develop new skills, discover their talents, and form positive relationships with peers and caring adults.
Position OverviewThe Emotional Regulation Education Specialist Intern will play a key role in supporting campers’ social-emotional development. This position focuses on designing, implementing, and evaluating mindfulness and emotional regulation lessons for children ages 5–14. The intern will work closely with camp leadership to ensure programming is engaging, developmentally appropriate, and responsive to camper needs.
Key Responsibilities Curriculum Development & Facilitation- Design engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans focused on mindfulness, meditation, and emotional regulation.
- Facilitate lessons for children ages 5–14 in a camp setting.
- Adapt content to meet the developmental and emotional needs of diverse age groups.
- Develop and administer pre- and post-assessments to measure camper growth in emotional regulation skills.
- Collect and analyze assessment data to evaluate program impact.
- Use data to make informed adjustments to lesson plans and instructional strategies.
- Prepare a comprehensive report summarizing assessment findings and outcomes.
- Provide insights and recommendations to support continuous improvement of Project Hope’s social-emotional programming.

Hours:
Approximately 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM - Onsite Requirement: Onsite presence is not required prior to the start of camp. Onsite attendance is required once camp operations begin.
- Mandatory Staff Training: June 22 & 23, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and June 24 at United Neighborhood Center’s Camp UNC (349 St. Andrew Lane, Tunkhannock, PA)
- Internship includes preparation hours in June and one additional day after July 31 for final wrap-up and reporting.
- Currently pursuing or recently completed coursework in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
- Experience developing and delivering educational or youth-focused programming.
- Familiarity with mindfulness, meditation, and emotional regulation strategies.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and written communication skills.
- Multi-language skills encouraged but not required.
Interns in this role will gain hands‑on experience in youth development programming within a community‑based summer camp setting. By the end of the internship, participants will:
- Develop practical skills in curriculum design and facilitation for children ages 5–14.
- Gain experience implementing evidence‑informed educational programming in a real‑world setting.
- Strengthen assessment, data collection, and program evaluation skills through the use of pre‑ and post‑assessments.
- Build professional reporting skills by producing a final summary report with insights and recommendations.
- Enhance communication, leadership, and collaboration skills by working alongside camp staff and program leadership.
- Gain exposure to nonprofit and youth‑serving organizational operations, including planning, implementation, and program improvement.
- Receive supervision, feedback, and mentorship from experienced youth development professionals.
This internship is designed to support students and emerging professionals interested in careers in education, public health, psychology, social work, recreation, or related fields.
