Commercial Construction Industry - Senior Accountant / Controller
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Accountant / Controller to lead and manage the accounting function for a growing commercial construction company. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and leading an accounting team in a fast-paced, project-driven environment. The ideal candidate brings deep construction accounting experience, strong leadership capability, and advanced proficiency in Foundation Software and Excel.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting team, ensuring accuracy, accountability, and professional development
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, job costing, and month-end/year-end close
- Manage and maintain Foundation Software, ensuring proper setup, job cost integrity, and reporting accuracy
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Ensure accurate job cost accounting, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion reporting, and cost-to-complete forecasts
- Oversee cash flow management, billing, collections, and vendor payments
- Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
- Coordinate with external CPAs on audits, reviews, and tax filings
- Support project managers with financial reporting, budget analysis, and variance explanations
- Leverage advanced Excel skills to build and maintain financial models, dashboards, and reporting tools
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and construction industry best practices
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA a plus)
- 5+ years of accounting experience in the commercial construction industry
- Hands-on experience with Foundation Software required
- Proven experience leading or supervising an accounting team
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and construction billing methods
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, complex formulas, reporting automation)
- Enterprise-level accounting experience preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner cross-functionally
- Base Salary: $75,000 - $90,000 (commensurate with experience)
