Trust Senior Registrar ST6+ in General Surgery

This is a 12month fulltime Trust Senior Registrar post in General Surgery based at Yeovil District Hospital within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The role includes participation in a 1:8 registrar level on call rota covering general surgery and urology, supported by consultants across Yeovil and Musgrove Park Hospitals. The post offers broad surgical exposure including colorectal, benign upper GI, abdominal wall, breast, paediatric surgery and opportunities to assist in robotic cases.

Responsibilities include managing elective and emergency surgical patients, leading the on call team, supporting junior doctors, and working closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective care.

The successful candidate will take part in clinics, ward work, SDEC sessions, audit, quality improvement and research, with encouragement to develop their portfolio for future surgical training applications. This post is ideal for those who have completed Core Surgical Training and are preparing for an ST3 NTN application. The postholder will provide senior registrar level care for elective and emergency general surgical patients at Yeovil District Hospital, participating in a 1:8 on call rota covering general surgery and urology with consultant support. Duties include leading the on call team, assessing and managing acute admissions, initiating investigations and treatment, and performing emergency procedures within competence. The role involves supporting junior doctors, coordinating ward care, and contributing to SDEC and outpatient clinics.

The postholder will participate in audit, quality improvement, and research, including initiating and supervising projects relevant to their surgical interests. They will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, ensure safe use of Trust resources, complete required administrative tasks, and uphold Trust policies on governance, safeguarding, infection control and patient safety. The role also includes opportunities for professional development and exposure to a broad range of general surgical subspecialties, including colorectal, upper GI, abdominal wall, breast, paediatric and robotic surgery.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Uptodate ATLS provider certification
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent
Experience
  • Minimum of 4 years postgraduate training experience
  • Experience working in the UK, EU or an equivalent healthcare system (beyond clinical attachments)
