Description
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of a director or other supervisor, assumes the responsibility and accountability for producing diagnostic procedures on anatomical regions in accordance with accepted standards of practice and protocols of the individual site radiologist. The Radiologic Technologist maintains a safe environment, conducts patient education as necessary, and administers contrast agents according to site-specific protocols under the guidance of a site radiologist.
The technologist follows quality assurance guidelines, maintains patient confidentiality, and collaborates with all other care disciplines to provide safe, efficient, and coordinated care for patients. Maintains clinical competencies through continuing education and recognizes and assesses changes in mental and/or physical conditions resulting in life-threatening situations.
- Provides direct and individualized imaging exams based on the application of imaging fundamentals.
- Verifies that patient and physician orders match.
- Prepares room and tools appropriate to the procedure ordered.
- Operates equipment in a safe manner.
- Adheres to ALARA exposure principles.
- Verifies and records patient information in EMR.
- Ensures proper long-term archival of images and documentation in accordance with state and corporate retention policies.
- Practices Universal Precautions and uses judgment based on critical thinking.
- Works under radiologist supervision, assisting during exams and diagnostic testing.
- Prepares, administers, and documents prescribed contrast.
- Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with WCCH policies.
- Maintains supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.
- Reports suspected abuse to appropriate agencies and provides patient education as necessary.
- Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
- Records care information concisely and accurately in EMR and on appropriate forms.
- Functions as a preceptor or educational resource during orientation of new personnel and students.
- Respects and honors cultural and religious differences; upholds HIPAA regulations;
- Is punctual and reliable for scheduled shifts.
- Maintains professional knowledge by completing Life Talent assignments, maintaining certifications and licenses to avoid lapses.
- Puts patient first and strives to provide excellent care.
- Participates in meetings, committees, and continuing education to improve departmental and organizational performance.
- Handles conflicts professionally and utilizes crisis-de-escalation skills when appropriate.
- Promotes cooperative relationships among healthcare teams and participates in problem-solving processes.
- Contributes to safe working environment and personal safety; recognizes safety hazards and takes action to maintain patient and staff safety.
- Adheres to Life Safety Codes, MSDS, Infection Control, and all other regulatory and hospital policies.
- Participates in performance improvement processes and projects.
- Performs duties in alignment with WCCH’s core values and code of conduct and within the VA Department of Health Professions scope of duties.
Skills and Abilities
- Effective oral and written communication skills including AIDET.
- Ability to utilize keyboard, computer, and general office equipment.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team to ensure quality patient care.
- Ability to prioritize work during periods of stress and high patient volume.
- Ability to lift or move patients of various sizes and ages between beds, wheelchairs, or gurneys.

- Ability to stand for long periods and read monitors/hear alarms with corrected vision and hearing.
- Knowledge to provide patient care based on diverse populations and age-specific criteria.
