POSITION SUMMARY:

Works in collaboration with all other care disciplines to provide safe, efficient, and coordinated care for patients.

Works under the guidance of the laboratory medical director and laboratory administrative director to collect specimens for patients of all ages and all patient types.

Collects blood specimens from patients of all ages by venipuncture or capillary puncture.

Uses the laboratory information system to register patients and enter test orders.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen collection, handling and processing.
  • Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures. Provides appropriate documentation.
  • Collects blood bank specimens according to policy and procedure.
  • Collects chain of custody specimens and provides appropriate documentation according to regulations and company protocol.
  • Attends laboratory staff meetings and keeps current with information provided; participates in continuing education.
  • Seeks guidance from the laboratory medical director, laboratory director or supervisor as needed.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs general administrative duties as requested.
  • Helps maintain appropriate inventory of supplies.
  • Communicates with co-workers and customers to promote a collaborative, cooperative environment.
  • Identifies problems and participates in the resolution with the laboratory director, co-workers and/or other appropriate hospital personnel.
  • Orients and trains new employees.
  • Provides instruction to students from the Wytheville Community College Phlebotomy program.
  • Abides by all hospital and laboratory policies.
  • Performs other functions as assigned by the Medical Director or the Administrative Laboratory Director.
  • Agrees to work all hours of laboratory operation.
  • Successfully completes an orientation program.
  • Uses critical thinking and judgement to analyze and make independent decisions.
  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations
  • Is punctual and can be relied upon to report when assigned to work.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by completing Life Talent assignments by established deadlines, maintaining certification and license requirements to insure no lapse in expiration
  • Puts patient first. Always. Strives daily to give all customers excellent care.
  • Involves the patient and/or family in the utilization of processes which respect patient’s rights.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and continuing education to improve both individual departmental and organizational performance.

  • Adheres to Life Safety Codes, MSDS, Infection Control, and all other regulatory and hospital policies

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Effective Oral and written communication skills, including SBAR and AIDET
  • Ability to utilize keyboard, computer, and various pieces of general office equipment
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member to ensure quality of patient care
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments during periods of stress and high patient volume
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients of various ages
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk, bend and transport up to 50 pounds.
  • Corrected hearing and visual acuity to read monitors, hear alarms, etc.
  • Ability to discern colors.
