GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist I for our Maintenance Program located in Pinedale, Wyoming.
Located along the Continental Divide, Pinedale offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the state. The community is surrounded by the Wind River Range, Gros Ventre Range, and Wyoming Range, and is just minutes from the Bridger Wilderness Area. Pinedale is approximately 78 miles south of Jackson and 90 miles south of Yellowstone National Park, making it an ideal location for those who appreciate Wyoming’s natural beauty.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy year-round access to mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, and other recreational activities. The area is also rich in history, hosting the annual Green River Rendezvous, a reenactment of historic fur trader gatherings held near the nearby town of Daniel. Additionally, Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax, offering added financial benefits.
As a Highway Maintenance Specialist, you will play a critical role in maintaining Wyoming’s roadways by leading a team and performing a variety of maintenance tasks. Your work will help ensure the safety and reliability of our transportation infrastructure.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead and support a maintenance team in the field.
- Perform road maintenance duties including snow removal, surface repairs, and equipment operation.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and WYDOT standards.
- Provide on‑call assistance during emergencies or adverse weather conditions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Safely operates and trains others to operate complex machinery in specialized maintenance applications
- Leads the performance of daily maintenance tasks as assigned by the Highway Maintenance Supervisor I; provides regular work direction to the crew
- Assists with tracking inventory, material usage, labor, and equipment mileage in the supervisor’s absence
- Provides advice and assistance on repair procedures needed for highways, equipment, and buildings; makes recommendations to the supervisor regarding any unplanned maintenance activities that may be needed
- Serves as technical resource for the crew; identifies and corrects any maintenance activity not performed according to state and federal safety and/or quality standards
- Communicates project issues to the supervisor; proposes a new course of action to safely keep the project moving forward
- Provides input to the supervisor regarding crew performance issues and success observed in the field
- Operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to: single and tandem axle trucks equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
- Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices; oversees on‑road traffic control operations, including oversight of safety procedures and quality standards
- Attends and completes all state and federal training required in order to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
