Bus Driver – Nature and Scope of Job

To represent Sweetwater County School District – Transportation Department in the daily transporting of students to and from school and all related functions. To assure the mission and philosophy of the District and department are supported throughout the position’s area of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supports the Department Mission of “Getting students ready to learn.”
  • Maintains a Wyoming commercial driver’s license with passenger endorsement and follows its requirements.
  • Meets current District vehicle insurance qualifications for driving coverage (less than 3 moving violations in 3 years).
  • Maintains insurability according to District’s insurance carrier criteria.
  • Uses positive verbal and non-verbal communication and interaction skills when working with students, parents, and all District personnel at all times.
  • Attends employee and department meetings as necessary.
  • Maintains accurate records of route and time for payroll purposes.
  • Maintains student discipline on bus utilizing District student discipline procedures.
  • Checks all gauges and listens for noises not pertaining to the normal operation of the bus.
  • Maintains a clean bus.
  • Demonstrates a sincere interest in children and their welfare daily.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff or parent/guardians in any public setting and chooses the appropriate time, place and supervisor to discuss problems.
  • Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
  • Other Functions
  • Completes paperwork requirements within time parameters established.
  • Attends training as scheduled.
  • Performs daily walk-arounds and completes report.
  • Washes buses as required.
  • Makes self available on varied schedule for curriculum and field activities.
  • Operates two-way radio and uses proper radio communications.
  • Monitors radio at all times while driving.
  • Utilizes proper OSHA procedures necessary when handling body fluids.
  • Assists in interviewing and recommendation of new personnel.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.
  • Provides feedback and recommendations to the Director of Transportation for overall effectiveness of the transportation department.
  • Obtains and maintains CPR and First Aid (Standard) training and certification.
  • Performs any other assigned duties as assigned by the building principal.
  • Job Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability
    • Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
    • Knows and applies Wyoming rules and laws of the road.
    • Recognizes mechanical problems that would require stopping of bus to prevent damage or potential accident while driving.
    • Reads gauges on dash of bus and recognizes indicators of problems.
    • Can follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.
    • Enunciates clearly and communicates positively throughout the work day.
    • Works with people of various personality types.
    • Uses two-way radio for communication purposes.
    • Possesses sound emotional judgment.
    Job Qualifications – Education, License, Certification and Formal Training
    • Appropriate CDL License with P and S endorsements.
    • Attends and successfully completes annual transportation training requirements.
    • Reading ability adequate to follow directions resulting in making effective work decisions.
    Equipment Used – Bus Driver

    School Bus (size of suburban to 84-passenger bus), Fuel Pump Spray Washer, Window Scraper Squirt Bottle, Two-way radio.

    Physical Demands – Bus Driver
    • Upper body strength to lift 25 pounds and load in vehicles.
    • Lower body strength to climb in, out, and around buses.
    • Can sit for long periods in a bus seat without fatigue or discomfort and shift four/eight speed buses.
    • Has sufficient physical strength to turn steering wheel of bus with no difficulty.
    • Can stand and walk throughout the work day.
