GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high‑quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. As a Highway Maintenance Technician located in Jackson, Wyoming, you will perform a variety of maintenance duties under limited supervision to ensure roadways are safe and functional.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists in training other technicians in equipment operation and maintenance
  • Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision
  • Operates heavy equipment: single and tandem axle trucks, auger trucks, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadways
  • Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices (signs, pavement markings)
  • Maintains highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all required state and federal training to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information to update others’ status and improve process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, performance evaluations, and stays current on technological advances
  • Removes snow and ice from roadways, evaluates effectiveness of treatments, and determines when changes are needed
  • Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment
QUALIFICATIONS & PREFERENCES

Preference may be given to applicants who already hold a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements. All applicants must have the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 12 months of hire.

  • Ability to obtain water certification, if required
  • Ability to obtain a certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Ability to obtain a defensive driving course certificate
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification
  • Ability to obtain flagger certification
KNOWLEDGE
  • State highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Hazardous materials response procedures
  • Federal and state requirements for personal protective equipment
  • Operation of single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Safe work procedures, First Aid, CPR, and OSHA safety data sheets for chemicals used
  • Basic office equipment use (computers, calculators, telephones)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Preferred:
    Associate’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Preferred: 2‑4 years of relevant experience in highway maintenance/ construction.
  • Alternatively: 0‑1 year of experience combined with an Associate’s Degree.
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift or carry 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat, hail)
  • Ability to walk long periods on even or uneven ground
  • Work around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Occasional overnight travel required
NOTES
  • FLSA:
    Non‑Exempt
  • WYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks to verify valid driver’s license.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and physical required; random drug and alcohol testing will be conducted.
  • Available for emergency work calls at all times, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of a call.
  • Drug‑free workplace policy.
